Someone pointed this auction out to me.
Re: Someone pointed this auction out to me.
Tough bikkies in my opinion. You buy a CUSTOM vehicle, you have to expect the odd hiccup. Heck, I mostly buy stock vehicles and still have hiccups.
Who could have seen the fuel pump relay giving out?
Im sure he was given AMPLE opportunity to have the vehicle checked by whoever he wanted. I know if I was looking at spending that kind of cash on a severely modified vehicle, I would get several people to look over it, seeing as I am not a mechanic either. (just a backyard one when the navara bends a tierod...)
And at the end of the day, its a 300kw extreme 4x4!! You are going to be breaking shit, replacing shit, bending shit and all the other shit that goes with our choice of recreational activity!

Cheers Bill.
I know how he flys but not drives.
Thanks for your import Dave. I do agree but he's quoting me saying, "after all work done it is reliable" and won't give me positive feedback on TradeMe till it is.
It didn't come off a car yard. It didn't sell with warranty.
Farked if I know. Guts me.

Re: Someone pointed this auction out to me.
I agree with the others he had plenty of time to get the truck checked out himself and if he did i doubt they would of picked up on the things hes being having problems with.
There will always be issues and wear and tear on a vehicle thats been modified like that.
I think you were honest with what you said in your auction answers and at the time of sale the truck was in the condition you said it was.
All the best with sorting this out.

Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, front and rear lockers, 35" simex.
Toyota FJ45 build in progress.
Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

you sold it with honest intentions and believed it was reliable as it had been to you, brake pads wear out, calipers seize, who knows if he drove it thru a river and left it sitting for a couple of months, which will put water into the caliper and fark it, as for passing a warrent with the caliper, the front does the work of stopping the truck not the rear, and unless you strip it down you wont see it, if you can't see the pads when woffing then it is taken as ok, ( i think) hes got a custom truck that needs a bit of maintainance, get over it and get used to it!!!
interesting that he is "pissed" for buying a "lemon" yet is willing to sell it onto a unsuspecting yank!!

Re: Someone pointed this auction out to me.
dont beat yaself up over it Pete
its happened to the best of us on here either way
heard of folks buying something and then having no end of issues with it when previous owner had a good run
also heard of folks selling it and then it falling apart almost immediately for the new owner, when they had no issues at all in their ownership reign
heck I sold my 40 and the rear pinion blew 300m after the new owner took delivery of it from the transporter
It seems like you are both top blokes and this will sort itself, but like the others have said, you answered all the questions honestly and he did choose the option to buy it sight unseen
for the money he spent on it, I know I would personally be getting an expert eye thrown over it before I committed to parting out the coin
like Chris, I am no mechanical expert, but form what he wrote they only seem like small trivial issues to me and it would probably run like a dream after a couple of small fixes.
It seems weird that he has opted to throw it up on ebay almost immediately because of a couple of small issues and like the others have said, hes prepared to pass on the problem to others without mentioning it in the auction
my 2c +gst = 2.003c

Interesting read... - I was leading the overnight trip that is mentioned about in the email posted above and yep it is a good thing we got the fuel pump running again as it would have been a nasty exercise getting it out!!
It was also the first time I had met Chris and first time meeting 'the 40' which was good having read sooo much about it. He never mentioned anything about selling it and said he was looking for a capable truck like this, he sold an 80 series to buy it.
To me from what I remember the wiring always was a bit of a hodge bodge and that is why it was taken somewhere else to be finished. Chris drove it nicely all weekend, it sounded, looked and went fine but just needed the couple of issues checked when we stopped.
Pete, it will gut you having this happen as even your ORE haters (
) will most probably say you were genuine as in, if it wasn't right then you'd just fix it.
I do hope you checked with him before posted personal emails on a public forum though....

Re the fuel pump. Nasty getting it out? Drop the fuel, undo 4 bolts and the tanks is out. 5 minutes from there the fuel pump is out.

But like someone said, you couldn't fore see that issue happening.
I've nothing to hide re communication between Chris and I.
Nor has he (apart from trying to ebay the 40).
So if he's sore about this being aired in a public forum? Sue me.
He's pissed? I'M PISSED!!
I've started threads worse than this mate.
It's interesting reading what others have to say about it. And I value other people opinions.
Bottom line.
I've been as honest as I can be about the truck.
I've also tried to make this deal go as smooth as pos.
-New paint
-New WOF (it had 3 months left on the last one)
-Filled the tank up for him
-Transported it down to him
-Fix alternator that failed for him
-Refunded $100 for a hole in the rear right hand seat
I feel I've already done more than most would...
Re: Someone pointed this auction out to me.
Sorry, I meant getting the vehicle out from where it was, not the fuel pump.

Duh! I wondered if you meant that after I posted. Sorry.
I'm in the middle of emailing Chris with some kind of resolution.
(also a link to this thread)
The point of starting this thread was never to put anyone down at all. I did say when I saw it on eBay, "goodluck to him". I was surprised to see it there. I knew he was having some issues with it but I didn't think he wanted to sell it.
I'm going to make a last offer of some cash to help him sort the things out.
I'm looking for a happy ending.
Re: Someone pointed this auction out to me.

I agree and if he posts bad feedback on Tardme then just respond with a link to here

If you talk with him tell him I offer him $1000 three Maketu mince and cheese pies (actually make that steak and onion as that is the ones that are usually left at the end of the night to give to my chickens ) for the vehicle as long as he delivers it at least to to the Picton ferry.

"He's pissed? I'M PISSED!!"
Pete, I think you need to relax a little. From what I can see he has not PooPoo'd you nor complained in public about the vehicle. If I was him i'd be pissed at you because of this whole thread- you should be dealing with this (his complaint e-mail) like an adult with him personally not parading it here to find backup.
And whats the problem with his e-mail anyway? you wanted to know why he is selling and he told you.
Lets put it this way. How PISSED would you be if you came on here and found that HE had posted a thread about YOU and how your truck was unreliable. You'd have spit the dummy... and to be honest I think you are the kinda person that if in his shoes probably would have posted a thread like that.
-Nathan
ps, Pete the trucks awesome, brakes and fuel pump shouldn't be your problem as you ain't a fortune teller.

I've emailed him the link to this thread and offered cash Nathan.
I've nothing to hide what so ever! Like I said, if he's pissed at this being aired in a public place? I'm sorry for that.
I was interested to hear what others thought about the deal and it's clear to me what others think.
I can't help think,
"There are NO friends in business".
Ain't that the truth.

there was no warrantee or ongoing road side assistance purchased from you, by him. dont refund or finance anything else. it's the nature of the beast in regards to the pump giving up. thats wheeling.
stick to ya guns. its unfortunate but you've been honest and it was a completely transparent transaction.
good luck guy.. keep us informed of the outcome..

Re: Someone pointed this auction out to me.
the dude is just a tosser with a cheque book. he paid 20 odd grand or whatever it was and thought he was getting a freken amg spec 4wd. fact is he bought a dam cool 30 (or more?) year old truck that has been modded to high hell. You have to expect to have problems. There aint no dealership for v8 40s to take it to when you have little problems like a faulty relay.
and pete, yea i reckon you are taking it a bit too personally. just fob it off and carry on and start doing some crazy shit with that buggy of yours

Re: Someone pointed this auction out to me.
Yep gotta agree with most of the other replys here, I brought a surf off trademe once without checking it out first, got half way home and found out the head was cracked to hell and back - could have taken it back and bitched'n'moaned but whats the point..it was a good excuse to strip the engine down and have a good poke around, also a mate brought a Pajero little while ago, first trip out to the bombing range he blew the motor, tough bikkies..he coughed up the cash and had the engine rebuilt didnt even bother contacting the seller.
For a highly modified truck like yours, it sounds like he's been having some VERY minor everyday wear and tear issues..half the fun of 4wding is sitting around out in the middle of no-where having a good yarn while someone fixes something, or the added challenge of towing someone back to civilisation. It's all a part of 4wding. If he didnt want to fix things maybe he should have brought a shinny and stuck to the motor ways...

Cheers nibs.
Just got a response from Chris.
This thread doesn't bother him at all. He's read it..
He's happy to settle with a cash sum to sort the remaining issues out.
(SWEET!!!!!!)
chevrolux.
I hear ya and I'm with you mate. But after I spent 16k on the Lexus buggy with my cheque book last year? I'm classed as a tosser to.
But that's ok. I understand people dissing others with a cheque book.
To get my aggression out today, I did a few laps round the bros short track in the pouring rain. 4 wheel drifting is awesome!!!

hey Pete Ive known you a while now and i know you are not the sort of guy who does things by half's, you bent your roof up so what do you do, Make it a convertible. you dent your front guard what do you do, take a second mortgage out on some bulldozer mud shifting fenders. Pete if you had known stuff was wrong with it you would have fixed it, most of us on here know that i wouldn't read into it too much. to me its not a judge to your character.

Getting it sideways while on the rev limiter is the best way to get a face full of mud.
Couple of corners I was smiling so much I could taste the mud.
Thanks for that Jase.
I'm stoked the deal is finally done and Chris is happy. That's all I wanted.

Pete you are to much of a good bugger for your own good. All of the faults mentioned (with the exception of the tear in the seat) are just shit that happens to trucks that get used off road.
Every time I go offroad I understand that things will pack up.
The brakes FFS how many threads do we get on hear a week about having to rebuild brakes??? I've seen at least 2 this week.
Relays crap out and it seems newer ones are worse. Dodgy wiring maybe maybe not who ever did it would know it backwards, have you ever tried tracing a OEM wire without a diagram????? Alternator? every other time you take a truck off road and you warned him before he bought it.
I would have told him to take a long walk off a short plank, nicely if I liked him and very unpolitely if I didn't. Its old and new but all requires TLC when used as intended.

Re: Someone pointed this auction out to me.
Pete you're a bloody good bugger.
If I felt I had described the vehicle to the best of my knowledge and given the buyer ample opportunity to check the truck out then I would probably have told him to go shove it.
Personally with my cruiser I feel I got a bit shafted, but I never went crying to the previous owner - what's the point, it's a 35yo truck bought sight unseen after all.
Caveat emptor!
