2.8 turbo rebuild.. how long should it last

Post by nachi »

Ok.. short story first..

Had an Izuusu.. took it to the local mechanic because it wasn't running too good.. he said its stuffed. I said fine and parked it up.

He had a 95 Hilux double cab for sale.. I bought it because he seamed like a straight up bloke. Now I'm wondering if I was right..

He had fully rebuilt the 2.8 and turbo-ed it. approx 30-40k ago..(That was the main reason I paid top dollar for it)..
I just wanted a reliable motor.. anything else wouldn't worry me too much.

I've had it less than 10k.. kept oil changes up to date and its been great.. Now its developed a knock.. less than 100 kms since the slight knock appeared.. its getting worse and am worried I might have been stitched up..

Its not diesel knock.. have checked that out..
(its a not nice knock).. :?

What should I do next? Take it to him or get it looked at someplace else.. if so where.

Any ideas to help me decide..?

Cheers

Most of the mechanics I know I wouldn't buy a vehicle off of as I've seen they can be the worst out there. Get it checked out and if its something obvious like banana peels or sawdust in gearbox then you have an argument to chase em up.

I'd go see another reputable mechanic for their thoughts and what it might be then go see your original guy if you feel its something thats been botched up just to run out the door.

I don't know how the as is where is crap works and what rights you have so someone else on here can help with that.

Not sure.. (its a 2.6 petrol)..just dropped back to 3 cylinders on the way from the coast.. small rattle up top.. thought (with luck) it might have been a valve spring or the like....(mechanic said low compression) its parked in the garage at the moment.. might have to have a nosy.. just too busy at work to find the time.

My biggest problem is time.. I work out of town most days.. 6am to 6pm.. bit hard to get most places during the week..

Might give Rick a bell tho..

Ended up dropping it back to the mechanic I purchased it off..
Confirmed..motor was rebuilt about 30,000 kms ago.. so its a bit of a surprise.
Fingers crossed its not a major.. and I'll have it back in a few days.
Otherwise it could cost a bit.. bit pissed off to say the least.
