hi well ive found that there is a clunking noise coming from the front diff area and have narrowed it down to the cvs as its the only thing thats got any decent play in it. so my question is how much play is too much in a cv ? should a cv move at all when you hold one end of the axle then try and twist the cv back and forth.
when i have my transfercase in 2wd and hubs engaged and i turn the front drive shaft by hand there is about 1/8th of a turn before it engages the drive on the wheels. any help on this would be greatly appreciated thanks
too much play in cvs?
Re: too much play in cvs?
CVs are splined so there shouldn't be any movement, sounds more like freeplay in your diffhead
Re: too much play in cvs?
nope, i may have not made myself clear enough here i have taken the cvs out and they are sitting in the vice it is not the spline on the cvs which has play it is the ball bearings and the other piece that sits in between the balls and the axle. there are very small chips on the bit which has the spline on it but the chips are located right next to the balls. one of the cvs has very small amount of movement but one has more than the other about 3times as much if you look at the cv outer shell and you watch how far it moves it would probably move about 2mm. thanks for your reply anyways.

Re: too much play in cvs?
ok, that makes more sense, in your first post you mentioned turning the driveshaft so it sounded like freeplay in the diff head.
As for the CV, I wouldn't know. Sorry

Cv's shouldnt have any rotational "play" that youd pick up with your hands.
They must have been clicking before they got to the clonking stage?

Re: too much play in cvs?
nope no clicking no clonking just noticed it when i pulled the diff out.
