Mate, they are the shear point
No bigger one's around, but you can get bigger tapers on 94+.
I'm going to take a wild guess......Have both of you wound up your torsion bars?
Excess angles bend the tie rods at will.
I carry both tie rods in the back as spares
And carry these,
Image

It takes less than five minutes to change them.

Welcome to D21's

Cheers,
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

How ruff do you have to be to damage them like this? Is a 2" torsoin lift to much for them to handle?

the acuter the angle the more leverage placed on it. so yes, the higher the lift the easier it is to bend them.

if you want to stop this happening you need to raise the outer mounting for the tie rod so it is more in line with the inner mounting. this is where you would beef up the suspension, not at the weakest link.

I play hard too, but the more I do, the less steering stuff I bend.
I would say that the dreaded "drag link roll" is to blame too.
I did a few mods, and the problem went away

They are cheap, an common as muck
They an't no tuff truck :!:
Easier to get bits for (than a lada)
Some running repairs are needed, that is a given.
Terranos have lots of un-taped potential, but when you come to the end of the horse power hunt and can't fit any bigger tires underneath, the steering is the "achilles heal".
Good entry level trucks
Hey, I still have one

Hey, Lada's are easy to get parts for if you live in Russia

But spares come in the form of a whole vehicle, most commonly under 1 grand :D

I remember reading about the Massey Ferguson ball joints a long time ago, you have since reminded me of this mod.
It may be worth seriously looking at this modification. I will have to read the whole thread over the weekend.............
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

I still like the Calmini system, but combine that with the Massey Ferguson TRE's and you have a winner!

What's your thoughts Simon?

Hmm......I can confirm the draglink works. I made a variant of this some time ago and it has worked well. However, 2 years later at warrant time, I have to re-engineer (or have done for me  ) a new version 2. After scrolling through the pics, I see others around the world have done the same, could of saved myself a whole heap of thinking by seeing these a couple of years ago

Welding the idler is a bit extreme :? but with the idler shaft braced and upgraded bushes the tie rod ends are the weak link, so the tractor thing looks petty cool 8)
Terranos have two different size tapers, all the ball joints on draglink and on the tie rods can be classed as big or small, small being the most common. I have been thinking of going to the large tapered tie rods on the inners, as the small ones last about 3 or 4 trips before they wear to the point of being unwofable
Still a bit torn between up-grading or leaving the fuse point the tie rods offer :|

Cheers,

So, your new centre link is WOFable now?
I am still thinking hard of importing a Calmini centre link, Pitman and Idler arm for a RHD truck and going with that. I would leave the TRE's as std as they are relatively cheap and easy to replace.
I am thinking the Tractor ones as good as they are, make for a lot of work as removing the hubs is also needed.

Im going to have to start getting all the measurements etc for the braces etc. Havnt bent or broken anything yet, But guessing i will with 2" lift and 31's? i drive it pretty hard.

One is machined to fit the other.
Mill out to a nominal size that achieves a straight hole and machine the slug to suit.

some txt that came with the blurry pics;

Sketchy_Racer wrote:Finally had enough of trying to rip the arse out of the centre link in my Terrano steering so machined up a custom setup after wrecking a link every trip.

starting with the stock bar with old joints ground out
One end machined out so that it is 18mm thick with a 25.00mm hole through the middle for the bronze bush to seat in.
Turning down the new center spigot, using 4145 high carbon tool steel
The assembly with phosphor bronze bushes in place
I did hit some problema fitting the new link, as either my pitman arm or idler arm were bent and didn't travel in the same arc so bound up when turning, so it took me a while to square that up and in the end still had to shim one end to get it all level, but overall really happy with the job, she's solid as a rock now, and according to the stress analysis in Solidworks I will tear the steering box out of the chassis before I bend or damage this thing!

Took 3 hours total machine time (incl setup) and about 2 hours to set up in the truck. Still cant believe how bad Nissan cocked this one up
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!
