70 Series PTO
70 Series PTO
Just went to spool up my PTO with some new synthetic rope only to find both hanger bearings on the pto drive shaft are stuffed... Ive removed the shaft but not the bearings yet, thought id check if anyone had any tips/tricks to replacing them? Bearing numbers dont seem to visible yet but hopefully easy to get.

Re: 70 Series PTO
Not sure on exact set up but comes down to basic engineering so I'll make a few assumptions and see how we go.
So the shaft is out , assume the bearings may be a press fit (interferance) in hanger housings on the outer race. By pressing on outer race of bearing or using suitable short piece of pipe or socket tap the bearings out. Not too critical on the old worn bearings but dont insert new bearings by pressing or hitting inner race etc. Also dont ask a mate to borrow one of there flash sockets to do this.
Once bearings are out take them to a bearing supplier such as SKF , Seiko , Bindons or similar. They will identify type of bearing , ie roller , ball or possibly angular if it needs to allow for axial load. May be a sealed bearing. Size to be measured ect. So if numbers not present no problem. If you are out of town and doing by post get someone to measure bearing outer and inner dia, and width.
Installing is the opposite , press or gently tap on outer race into housing. If not a sealed bearing and there are greasepoints on the hanger prepack the bearing with new grease. Also putting bearing in freezer for a few hours will cause it to shrink slightly making it easier to slide in housing , note this will not help it as far as shaft to inner race fit , wait a few minutes for this part.
Fannies your aunt , bobs your uncle.
I may stand correct by someone but just running through the basics, hope this helps.

Re: 70 Series PTO
they're not press fitted.. there is a bolt in the middle of one unit and then it just pops apart.
.
take seal out then find the right bearing and seal to replace them.. can't remember the other one.. but I'm sure they aren't pressed in.. bit of DW40 and sweet as..
I'll have to take a pic in the weekend of the other retainer..
Cheers K

Yeah I got them both apart today, one had completely blown to bits and the other locked solid. Got one bearing out complete, its a sealed NSK so easy to replace just got to match up some seals. At first it looked all bad but after a bit of work today its a simple repair thats going to last forever now. Cheers for the advice

How many meters (and what diameter) of rope did you get on it?

Re: 70 Series PTO
Its actually a safari PTO ive adapted to 70 series driveline, Managed to get 30m of 10mm on but its under no load at the moment due to the bearing issues! 30m seems perfect amount for the safari drum. Think I might criss cross it on once I can load it up properly, from what Ive read on here it seems to be the go to stop it cutting in. Im new to this synthetic rope though!

You'll probably get around 40m when loaded up nice and tight.. and oh you'll love it..

I've got 12.5mm 50m on my drum and loose filled the drum but when tight it would be about 2/3 full.. and amazing on the hands.. Only got you use mine 1 time..LOL then busted my winch..lol

Ha ha, corrected I was
Didn't mean to dribble all over your post
Sounds like a good set up , looking closely at getting 70 myself, PTO winch would be a nice bonus
cheers

Re: 70 Series PTO
The bearing races were locked solid onto the shaft and ended up doing the socket trick in the vice to press them off, Cant wait to try the new rope. No more wire spikes in the hands or hiding behind trees to get away from recoiling wire!
