South Island 4wd tracks

Hey guys,

I am planning a trip down to Christchurch to go 4wding with a couple of other trucks based down there, early May. I would love some advice on which tracks are worth doing/areas worth exploring as I have no knowledge of south island tracks and only have a book on north island tracks.

We are taking a 3 day weekend (4 day for me since i have to ferry), so could potentially travel from chch to west coast and back if it is worth it (well i actually have no idea how long it takes haha). My truck is a bighorn on 33s (I have a winch), the other two trucks are a bighorn and terrano with mud tyres, but standard size. They dont have snorkels either. Therefore we wont be doing any hardcore stuff and its as much about getting out exploring off the tarmac as it is about real 4wding.

I think the first morning is going to be spent exploring the tracks/river at the waimak. Im guessing there is probably a bit of country in towards the Arthurs pass region where there are tracks and good rivers etc to explore but like i say i know nothing about the region.

Any ideas/tips would be sweet!

definitely head over to the west coast if you can. Big River, Denniston, Cockeye creek and no name rd, Napolean hill ,Waitahu River. All easy but fun tracks with great scenery. Theres worsley in chch can be as easy or as hard as you want it. Waipara river. Ashley river and Ashley tracks.

waimac can be alot of fun but be careful

access is off harrs or harris/diversion rd, the main gates are shut so you must use the other access points
