92 Escudo warning light

Post by keithr »

Hey guys, my 92 Escudo has a red warning light on the top left hand end of the dash - looks like an engine. After stopping for 40 minutes (oil, water, temperature all OK, nothing on road under vehicle) and continuing, the light was out, but came back on after about 15 minutes on open road. Carried on and got home OK, but does anyone know what it means?

yeah it means the sticker has fallen off. Get a new sticker, place it over the red light, problem solved

Red lights generally mean something bad is happening or that the sender wire has come off, used to happen to mine all the time but if you choose to ignore, it will be at your peril.

Ok, took it to garage, turns out it is the oxygen sensor on the exhaust. It only has one wire coming out of it where there should be four - the cable it is plugged into has four. Looking into getting a new part. Anyone else struck this?

Good find, should help your fuel economy a bit too replacing the dead O2 sensor. New ones are usually quite expensive, best bet is to look for a good one at the wreckers. From memory they do have a finite lifespan though.

Well I can hardly type this as I'm still holding my head after a phone call giving me the price of a new sensor flown out from Japan. $516.21 incl. If I can track down a used one, is there any way of knowing how much life it has left in it?

I have no idea if its possible but you can cheap aftermarket sensors. I know some guys that fit em to all sorts of engines. Thought maybe you could use that but getting it to interface with the truck could be a nightmare perhaps.

same thing happened to mine and garage also said meant to have four but when i went to get new one by exhaust place said was meant to have one and the reason for four wires is because they use same wire loom as v6 etc (might be wrong) but anyway got given a single wire sensor to test to see if it was right. then reset comp and haven't had a issue since
