manual box for behind a 245 hemi.... suggestions

The 3spd auto gearbox in my swb 2a gave up at the weekend for the 2nd time since iv owned it (about a yr now)... its got a 245 hemi motor up front.

Decided im going to convert it back to a manual. so i need to get everything bar an adaptor plate which ill have to get from Aus.

which gearbox should i be looking at? iv been told that later s3 gearboxes are the strongest, is there any truth in this?

finally does anyone on here have or know of a reconed gearbox or one with low ks along with everything else? I dont want to buy one only for it to give up on me in 6months because its worn. Would prefer everything to come out of one vechile as it just seems to make more sense to me to keep it as a set.

i live in auckland but would be willing to drive to get it all and potentially help remove everything from a donor landy.

I got an adaptor for a slant Valiant motor, dont know if it will fit a 245?? You might want to find out as you can have this cheap.

thanks but unfortunately from what iv read so far im pretty sure it wont fit because of the slant. ill look into it more though.

I believe the series 2 gearboxes are stronger than series 3 because series 3 just had an extra bit machined out of the series 2 housing to accept the additional synchros.

Yeah iv since found out that late 2a boxes were the strongest so that's what ill be hopfully getting once I find an adaptor plate...

They're all pretty shithouse tbh. Why not stick a decent gearbox in since you have to do a conversion anyway...

yeah im open to anything at the moment. i want that farking auto gone... just thought maybe series land rover because i know its been done before with success.

i dont want another one. i want something manual that can take a beating offroad and as turoa pointed out i may as well do it with a stronger box as im going to need a completely new clutch and mounts ect ect.... series land rover was my initial thought because its worked before and you dont need to move diff or spring mounts.

Could try a FJ 40 box, or Ive seen a Nissan Atlas truck box with a Landrover transfer adapted to it. Saw it on TM awhile ago and was nearly going to buy it. Would of had to move engine further forward which put me off.

the 4 speed lt95 box as used in army landrovers might be strong enough. they are clunky and feel like they will fly to bits but they had the rover v8 sitting in front of them so should be ok. there was one on tme recently with transfer box which sold for about $50 so keep your eyes peeled, they dont come up that often.

Not suitable unless he changes front end to CV's as these boxes are permanent 4WD and his land rover isn't. Also I think they are too wide to fit into a series chassis.

Bottom line the simplist way to go manual is with a series IIa or SIII gearbox with an adapter plate which he seems to have sorted. The SIIa doesn't have synchros so is considered stronger than the SIII which does and that is pretty much the only difference between the two apart from location of clutch slave cylinder.

Yeah hes right the 2a box is strongest and i dont want to change cv's ect so it wont be an ex army box going in...

im still looking for an adaptor plate there are a couple in aus that iv been told of but dont really want to have to pay to get them shipped over from WA when im not totally sure of their condition....

looking at possibly going to a w56 box out of a toyota ln61 as iv found an adaptor kit that includes everything but the gearbox but need to figure out how to do the handbrake and what the diamentions of it all are to see if itll fit.

its defiantly going to be a few months before i find out what im doing so ill probably be putting the rego on hold... im already desperate to get back into the mud after the weekend....

still keen on ideas for boxes if people know whats worked/hasnt before.

Does that mean you'll use the 40 in the meantime

Im probably missing something here but I thought LR diffs have UJ's because its simple and the only draw back is a poor lock. Being full time 4wd would make it use more gas but other than that the center diff lock should sort the rest out?

I would recommend getting a series box. Most bugger out because of age or mud in the gbox oil. You could probably rebuild one pretty cheaply yourself. One with less synchros could be easier and cheaper to rebuild.

i think its going to be a series 2a box that goes in because after all it is a land rover and i really dont have the time or money or expertise to be messing around with something that might not fit (a toyota box) and hasnt been used in a series land rover before. i also dont want to have to run a new handbrake system.

rego's going on hold tomorrow afternoon as its going to be a few months till shes running again...

and im still after an adaptor plate 245 hemi/hemi 6-series landrover.
i know theres one in upper hut/wellington owned by a guy called Adian/rif_raf13 that was up for sale august/september last year.

but if anyone know of another one...
