whats a SWB safari worth?
Have family member with an early 90's 4.2 SWB safari completley stock standard no rust at all sliding windows all good. Factory PTO winch and sunroof.
He is looking to upgrade to a late 90's terrano or similar and is getting some pretty low dollars offered for a trade in. I am thinking about buying it to sell on for him or build as a hunting truck for myself.
It has high (330 ish) k's and bald front tyres. 4wd and pto both work but it has a pretty decent knock in 4wd (possibly lost a tooth or something) Not sure what its like but he has only ever driven gravel tracks for fishing in it so i'd be surprised if it has anything serious wrong with it.
What do you think it is worth?

Tranny cases for them are pretty cheap. Auto or manual. I would think up around 8K.

Manual, hence the factory PTO winch

8 is pretty optimistic. I'd say around 4-5 with that many KM's.

Re: whats a SWB safari worth?
yea manual, would you guys be thinking its a transfer case problem? I need to have a good look at it. He also tells me it makes a bit of a funny knock when open road driving but he said its only when it rains..... All sounds a bit strange. I guess it could be the body mounts or something??

yea i thought it would be worth about that but only when it was fixed which i guess could cost a couple of grand

Re: whats a SWB safari worth?
The knock when in 4wd MAY be auto hubs engaging/disengaging? If it has manual/auto hubs, you might be able to lock them, then try 4wd again?
The knock while driving may be body mounts, mine did this, mainly when wet.

Re: whats a SWB safari worth?
yea i need to borrow it and chuck it on some stands and have a really good look. He has had it about 8 years and apart from weekend fishing all he has ever done is on road driving with a lot of long trips out of town. Never had any serious issues so i'm reluctant to let some car yard only give him a couple of grand for it.
Hmmmm i can see me getting yet another project with plans of basic repairs/mods and getting out of control again. Duno about a dirty old nissan though..

If they've done a lot of 4wd th chain can stretch and then you loose drive to the front wheels when it jumps! Quite an interesting thing to happen and not overly common but has happened to me. I was running a lot of power, 35's front locker etc though.

Re: whats a SWB safari worth?
well my mums partner has bought a new truck and wouild like some money out of the safari, i havent got the cash to buy it but think at 4k it is a bloody cheap truck. Have a few offers from work mates etc but anyone that wants a swb safari 5 speed good condition factory pto for 4k let me know. Needs a wof and reg but shouldnt be a problem to get them. Will sell fast.
Would advise getting it checked out, he's had it for 5 odd years and hadn't had any problems apart from the above but the reason im not buying it for 4k (apart from not having the cash) and selling it for 6k is just time, he wants cash now and i couldnt even look at it for a month or so. I can take pics etc and cast my toyota eye over it but would recommend someone having a look themself.

Re: whats a SWB safari worth?
had someone called Ben have a look at it during the week while I was away, seemed to think he knew what was wrong but said to the owner he didnt want to post it up her as someone might not buy it. Can they please either get in touch or post up there findings on here, don't want to hide anything from anyone so happy to have input. I havent even driven it yet, will take it for a spin on the weekend as well and see what I can find.
Mark the owner is a straight up guy so if I can find out whats wrong with it he will either have it fixed or tell anyone who looks at it that there is the problem.
If it looks to serious I may consider buying it and parting the truck out.
Cheers.
