What to do?

Post by lexulance »

Can anybody give me some advice,
I have built up an RN46 Hilux with a lexus v8 in it, it is a very capable truck, it has 50mm body lift, old man emu raised 50mm leaf springs and a lockright in the rear diff, which has been converted to disk.
Also has 33inch buckshot mudders, i have built a short flat deck for it aswell the vehicle is not certified but has been done to a very high standard.
Im tired of the poor fuel economy which i know is to be expected from a v8?
I have been looking at 70 series diesel landcruisers and i am getting interested in buying one as a replacement for the hilux, im just after advice about what to do.
Keep the hilux and just put up with spending upwards of $100 in fuel every time i go for a play and knowing i wont be able to go very far on that $100 or sell it buy a landcruiser and basically start from scratch getting the vehicle off road capable to the same level as the hilux?
Any thoughts or help would be great

It sounds like there's a prob with the tuning etc as most 1uz swaps are not that bad, with mine on 35in simexs with the factory surf 65lt tank i can drive a couple of hours to a trip, spend all day caining then drive home with usually 1/4 of a tank still left or sometimes more.

Need some more info about what kms you are travelling and what ratio diffs etc you are using, also engine management is it factory 1uzfe computer or is it a link etc?
Mine has a 50l LPG tank as the fuel tank and is running a G4 link ECU, the tune is fine, i know this as i have had it on a gas analyser and the fine tuning has been done with an A/F ratio sensor and gauge assembly, also is running 4.8:1 diffs so in 5th at 100km/h is pulling 3000rpm

that's a tricky one ae mate, now ive driven my 350 chev powered surf around a bit the bill is really starting to bit like you're finding yourself  but i just love the sound,id be guessing your the same

one thing ive been thinking about a lot lately and you mentioned it in your last post is rpm at 100kmh,or as ive been thinking just high rpms in general

we all just need to figure out how to bolt on a 6th gear  that'l give us lower rpms and save the gas,ive put in 4.5s now as the 4.88s were just too high but I would've preferred to keep them in for off road ratios

Yep, looks like im not alone  i love the v8 and the instant response with excessive right foot application, no waiting for boost!
Was out for a play on sat with a couple of diesel hiluxes and a couple of suzukis at the waipara, v8 was definately in a class of its own
would like to get out with some other v8 owners and have a play one day

im definatly going through more than that, day trip up murawai last i got 4km/l on road 2km/l off road  but dam was the loud pedal down and she was hauling  ,what I'm thinking or have been going over in my head is playing with the box so high range gears are spread out more to lower on road rpms, I guess you'd call it the reverse of putting in crawler gears type thing, hell I could even mod the low range gears whole I'm there but in my head it works out that id get a lot better on road kms/l which is what I need to make vehicle my daily driver and not be broke and get same performance off road as I'm usually in low anyway, sure pick up on road would be slower but that's why you just open her up more.as far as i can tell we all have the problem of cruising at 100 or 100 myself and the revs are just too high, cut 1000 off what were getting and were going to save alot

Link G4 and 4.8's aswell with a manual shifting auto with no lockup in overdrive either, with my 33's on i can get upto 550-600km from a tank without driving to slow either.

Im getting an average of 5.5km/l on road but i have had it up to as good as 6.7km/l on road, off road just doing fairly easy going tracks  it uses roughly 6-9l/hr, but with mud and loud pedal goes out to about 9-14l/hr
The on road km/l are done at 100km/h driven light footed.
I guess its not to bad really but with the actual price of fuel being so high it does get a bit annoying
But its the old saying IF YOU WANT POWER YOU MUST PAY FOR IT AND ENERGY OUT EQUALS ENERGY IN

I moved from a fairly capable but gutless 2lte that did a days wheeling on 1/4 of a tank to a v8 that currently does 200k to a tank (wiring loom 1/2 melted and not worth tuning until the new body goes on

the gap between diesel and petrol running costs are getting closer together so is it worth getting a diesel when you add in higher rego and RUC

.... really depends on how big a smile the truck puts on your face,
