Impressive Surf in ChCh ?

Post by pradon35s »

hey just wondering if anyone on here owns or knows this truck?

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 158288.htm

looks like a bloody capale 4wd! anyone seen it in the flesh and is it as good as it looks? if my sale on prado goes thru and the bank comes on side I could be keen.

haven't owned anything that modified before in the way of trucks. would you say it's a reliable set up?

If you want to know how reliable it is, go to the guy who maintains it, just give Rick @ 4wdacc a call on 03 365 1909 he'll fill ya in.

Although reliability is in the eye of the beholder, as generally they are the driver and reliability is mostly about how you drive (providing you keep up with routine maintenance of course).

Been on many trips with it when Liethfield owned it, its capable, you just need the balls to drive it.

I just see it that if I brought a old hilux and built what he is selling I'd be looking at least 30k+ ?

hopefully see how I go would be my dream that thing.

cheers for all your inputs, definitely got the balls to drive it mind you I'd probably never hit it's full potential just hacking round canterbury rivers lol

lol when i brought it i got 57k worth of receipts but forgot i put them under the back seat rubber mat and they got wet so no proof of this lol bugger. i have spent a lot of time and money fixing and repairing this and as for servicing i.e oil changes i have done it every 4-5 thou and also changed all diff, gear box. transfers quiet a few times due to river work. all other servicing has been done by rick and Nathan.

when driving her YOU SAY NO TRUCK SAYS GO. some times you think how the heck did it do that but its bloody fun.

all i would do is a round of new shocks and springs to freshen her up and she will be like a new truck

Very well sorted truck. The fella (leithfield) who built it is a very talented engineer.

Flick Jason (vvily) a pm, He'll tell you all about it but Id recommend it to any potential buyer

Yes it's certainly a capable vehicle, like Al I was on many trips with Kev and his family, one trait the vehicle had was as it had so much flex, when stuck it would dig craters
Here's a link to a couple pics with the old body on

Almost true Tom. Kevin never built it, he added to it. This truck was built by Murray (Tooly???? insert last name here as I can't remember it).

He was the head maintenance engineer for Sanitarium (I believe). Kevin will be the firstv to admit that his engineering skills are not at that level I think you owuld find.
To buy a rig like this as a bush pig or river hack is a total waste in my opinion, but if you have the cash and that's waht smokes your tyres....then this is very good place to start. :P

Good luck on the sale Jase, and to the new owner 8) .
Rock, Tim and Al, this has stirred the old memories, I know why you can't get away from it Tim. Murray who as Rock put it started this project was one of the Modified Hi Lux innovators in Canterbury starting about 14yrs ago with a twin cab on 33"'s; when everyone else had 31"s , this one I would have at a guess would be about number six and each build got better and more modified. Murray is a highly qualified and quite achiever that a lot of builders of Hilux's have tried to follow.

MEMORY LANE,

FITZY
PS, This vehicle is one of the few that could could climb unaided the last hill out of the Tailing's Track.

Sorry for the thread jack Jase. :P
Totally agree Fitzy, The original Mutt was on bracketry and suspensioin that Murry engineered (I bought his old v8 single cab as a wreck). There was a lot of geometry that needed sorting on that design, but by the time he built this surf most of that was ironed out. It drove bloody well just after he built it, but it has undergone a lot of work since then as well.

not my thread Grant haha

im hijacking it myself

I heard bits and pieces about the girl since i have brought it. i new Murray built it and it was one of the for fathers if 4wding around Canterbury. i have not touched none of the geometry of the truck due to it working well but i have sorted out the steering issues and also had a sway bar made for it whilst driving on road. So she is no longer a Rhino to drive.

would like to see her go to a new home and then i can start on the TOYBOX

Hi Jas, what did you do to sort the front end? I can't remember which way it moved but last time I drove it when accellerating it would pull one way and when braking or de-cellerating the opposite :o
Was a beast off road which is it's territory 8)
Kev and his family are one lot from here I sure miss, i'm hoping to get well back into the game....hopefully Kev will see it and buy it back :P
good luck with the sale, it's actually a huge amount of vehicle for the money, considered it myself , but i've gone in a different direction

i just done a bloody 4 page essay on what we done and computer crashed so here we go again...........

The lower rear link arms had stuffed bushes and when you changed up or down gear under idle the diff crabbed to the center of the road and when you put it under tow it would kick into align again which was freaky.
Under brake it would dive off road in the opposite to above so Rick sorted that in a hurry.

i also had a new High steer kit Pitman arm and Reco steering box which helped heaps. With the new pitman arm we brought the steering arm more inline with the panhard rod which made the steering allot more responsive.

also had a new front sway bar made up for it that is easy to disconnect for off road use which makes it feel like a standard truck around round abouts (well you know what i mean)

hope that helps Tim

I remember a day when Kev dug himself so Fing deep in mud and sand down in the Waipara that he rang Tim to rescue him. Tim's truck was out of action so he rang me. The mighty Nissan SWB winched the poor bastard out. Even the tractor couldn't pull him. I think it was a triple line pull that night.
