Suzuki SJ - inbred with a 2lt..
Suzuki SJ - inbred with a 2lt..
hey.
iv decided to part with my 78 cruiser after the years of thrashing and service it's done for me, thinking if getting something to daily drive (6 and 1/2 inch lift) and 37" creepys to work everyday with no heater isn't nice lol. and thinking of building up another sj..
I had a 413 before, did spring lift (leafs), cut guards debumpered and fitted 31s few years ago when I was bout 17.
I wanna go back to a zuki, don't get me wrong I'm Toyota at heart! haha hence my idea...
I wanna put ln65 diffs under it, thought soa but dont want a top heavy tippy truck.. that's straight forward enough, heaps of info on here.. BUT
I was thinking if possible to use a 2lt or even just a dirty 2l.
my reasoning with the 2lt is I don't like wiring so using the older I'm eliminating some of that. I was thinking bout the 2l gearbox transfer set up. I'm only pondering as this could be a stupid idea?
has anyone seen it or done it?
any tips or negative opinions welcome.
cheers adam

Re: Suzuki SJ - inbred with a 2lt..
I personally wouldn't bother with Hilux axles as the point of an SJ is its skinnier so doesn't fit in ruts and one side sits up on top and it can drive anywhere. I would also think that it would make it quite front heavy too.
But if you do the engine swap I guess you will need to change axles. Also what box would you use?
Just my opinion though

Re: Suzuki SJ - inbred with a 2lt..
^^^ What he said. Stick a G16B in it with a BenT adaptor kit and you will have more than enough power for 33's even. Upgrade stock cv's with cromo ones and you will have an awesome zook.

Re: Suzuki SJ - inbred with a 2lt..
I kinda wanna run like 35/36inch simexs, that's why I wanted to eliminate the sj driveline as iv heard they are not the best, even tho I had no troubles in my old one on 31s.
Re: Suzuki SJ - inbred with a 2lt..
look at Chrome's build thread. Puts the world in to perspctive and makes you drop the 9" on your SJ

Re: Suzuki SJ - inbred with a 2lt..
well if you dont like SJ drive lines then just stick the SJ body on a Toyota chassis. Lees work than adapting diffs, gearboxes, engines etc into a weak chassis.

Re: Suzuki SJ - inbred with a 2lt..
I just don't get why people see the need to stick big tyres and big engines in zooks
Stick 32's on it, re-gear it to suit. The G13b will cope fine, or the G16 for some more wheel spin
32's will give you roughly as much ground clearance as a Hilux on 36's, with about 1/4 of the weight.
If you stick a big motor in, you need to stick a bigger gear box and transfer in, so you need to extend the chassis.
With more power and weight you need to fit bigger axles to cope.
Because of the bigger axles, you need to fit bigger tyres to keep the same ground clearance you had on the zook running gear. That means some serious guard chopping and panel beating to fit.
So now your Zook is heavy, wide, wheel base to short in relation to its width, has a butchered tub, and probably pretty tall as well.
You might also find it won't go anywhere near the places it went before you made it big fat and HEAVY!!!!!
Sorry, there are far to many threads recently on dudes wanting to make their Zooks so called "big and tuff", do you not realise just how well these trucks actually go??
Its all to do with their light weight, narrow stance, awesome ground clearance and wicked power to weight ratio

I agree with DB.
32's and they go just about anywhere. I had an escudo for a while with the 16v 1.6l and it went alright and was OK on gas (lame road wheels). Transplant that running gear into an SJ? Probably has been done many times over just because it works well.
With 32's im sure you will still need to do a few CV/diff replacements depending on how you drove. (the 32's on my LR were off a zook. Guy was selling them because the truck kept eating CV's)
A 2lt driving 36 simexs would be pretty gutless and most likely pop if you have a heavy foot and are impatient

Amen to that.... and the only thing a 2LT is suitable to be translated into is a scrap bin
Re: Suzuki SJ - inbred with a 2lt..
my (ex Jafa)old Sj with a cab only, 31s with welded diff was the most capable little thing, and it was so much fun going places with ease that my 70 on 35' simexs and lockers struggled!
also look up puddle jumpers thread, he is putting a vitara motor into a mint little flatdeck
zooks are small and fun, why alter the one charatsitic (sp) that makes them so good!!

Re: Suzuki SJ - inbred with a 2lt..
My little red suzi has 27" tires and a rear locker and I reckon it kicks ass!

Re: Suzuki SJ - inbred with a 2lt..
Just to throw in another mix. The current A class truck (SJ413) we use has a J18 engine, vitara auto and 4.16 t/c, on 31s. That has a shit ton of power and could easily run 32s. Havent broken any axles or CVs in 2 seasons of nationals so I dont see why you would have to start popping stuff on 32s
Rereading you dont like wiring, I would just throw in a carbed vitara 1600 with one of Bens adapters, put on some 31s, and transfer gears and away you go.
