Leaf and coil, does it work?

Post by lexulance »

Just wanting to know if anybody has tried this set up and what problems have been encountered.
What im refering to is standard leaf sprung hilux, with all but the mounting eye and the second long leaf in each spring pack taken out, spring retainers put on the top of the diff housing and the chassis rail and a coil spring added :?
Looking at trying this setup to improve the ride quality off road, not so worried about increasing the travel alot, it seems easier in theory than cutting and fabricating mounts etc for say a prado or safari adaption as it also withdraws the need for a track rod or changing the steering.
So any advice etc would be good

Maybe have a look on some aussie forums. There is a guy in queensland doing this for the new cruisers full time. Only leaving one or two leaves in the pack, way more flex and nicer ride apparently.
Will try find where i was reading it

Did this to my 60 series Cruiser 15 yrs ago. It make a big differance to to the ride quality. Aslo alows for a cheapish spring lift. Just be careful taking out too many leaves in the pack as you may induce axle wrap and root them completely. If however you fit this system in conjunction with a track bar, it should be all good.
