Re: HJ45 longterm project.
Id vote 350. If you want more torque, revs, supercharger, what ever, a few aftermarket parts and you have it tuned just how you like.

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
have decided to go 350 chev, on the look out for an engine now
Re: HJ45 longterm project.
Aftermarket parts for chevs are really easy to get hold of an are relatively cheap.
I just rebuilt mine for about $2500 (parts an machining only, I put it together)

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
how much would a rebuild cost? can get a complete imported motor, "good runner", from charlton auto imports in gore for $2,000. good or not good?
Re: HJ45 longterm project.
I'd nearly sell you a fully rebuild 350 4 bolt for that. except I havent finished it. and want to keep it myself
Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..
Re: HJ45 longterm project.
My brother brought a 245 hemi from a wreaker in gore for his cj valiant. Wreaker didn't realise it was worked. Used to drag off 440ci dodge in valiant limo
Moral of the story, all the best motors come from gore
If you are purchasing from a wreaker as a "good runner" and you get it and its poked or blows up after minimal running. You can send it back and expect a full refund under the consumer gurantees act as it was not fit for purpose
If you want to rebuild to a "standard" motor for parts you would want to allow $2500 as fakey has just said thats what it cost him... Looking at 250hp to 300hp depending on what you motor was origionally out of.
If you want more hp
Alloy HP heads - $2500
Performance Cam grind - Costs similar to standard
High compression pistions - Around an extra $1000
Performance intake - $500
Performance carby - $800
Tuning - $300
And you will need extractors
Around 400 to 450hp

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
So 2 grand wouldnt be too bad? whats the difference between a 2 bolt mains and 4 bolt mains? which is better?
Cheers

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
4 bolt main if you plan to rev over 6k rpm.
2 bolt main is fine for most applications.
the only down side of dropping in a chevy plant, is that there is SO MANY cool parts you can buy for them!! it just about drives you mad looking at ebay and trying to think how you can afford some more go fast parts for your motor.

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
think im going to do powersteer while im at it. been offered an electric powersteer pump out of a MR2 that a mate had in his hilux for $300. are these any good?? good price or not?
Cheers.
Cheers.
Re: HJ45 longterm project.
Sounds pretty expensive if youre going with the chev a brand new chev pump is around $300 I think. But if youre buying a runner from the wreckers it may even already have one on it

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
I could see how an electric one would be useful if space was tight allowing you to mount it somewhere else. This is why its from an MR2 im guessing.
If space is not an issue, there is no point in working your alternator hard to suppling current for an electric power steering pump. (Im guessing they would draw a fair bit of current when your trying to steer out of a rut)
You should have enough room to mount a pump on the side of the motor run off a belt.

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
Theres 3 good options for power steer boxes in these just all depends on what kind of setup you need, how many mods you can do, and what access to lathes etc you have.
Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, front and rear lockers, 35" simex.
Toyota FJ45 build in progress.
Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
would prefer something simple, dont have access to any lathes etc so would have to get this done in town if needed.
Re: HJ45 longterm project.
Had decided to keep engine as is for now to try save money as am thinking of shifting. Then just my luck the transfercase shit itself, do i need a specific one to replace it or are the 40 series ones much the same?
Just a side thought does anyone know how hard th H series 4 speeds are to come by?
Cheers Deano

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
