I just want to know it any one has done a 3l to a 3l turbo conversion an wt parts they used.
ive found a 2l turbo manifold which bolts onto my block the back of the gtx turbo bolts onto the front of the wrx 1 giving me large compresser wheel an a decent sized exhaust side aswell.
if there is any1 on the site thats done the conversion, what boost r u running at normal driving an at ur gear change point??
any help would b great.

i understand that the turbo sounds like a over kill but thats why im putting the back end on it off a mazda gtx so it will spin up alot earlier. ive been told that a turbo off a 2l petrol engine is about the right size to put onto a 3l diesel or sumthing close such as me 2.8 an shod inturn run lower boost an normal driving untill i accelerate

you want to run no more than 5-6 psi on a std diesel as they are strong but very high compression. You can go to a thicker head gasket (double or copper) double (two on top of each other) is a pita for leaks poor sealing, copper neds heated to pink before you bolt it down.
if you want bigger boost you need to decompress it more. Petrol is more forgiving as they are far lower compression remember it is the heat that ignights diesel and more pressure means more heat.
I have seen a truck free boost to 12 psi down ruapuna and pre ignight, the truck was a write off. also with boost the power curve can be savage on driveline.
That said if you get a decent turbo setup it will drive like a car, you need to get the heat away from the head fast (free flowing headers) on a diesel or you will crack heads. how about a supercharger? you modify the intake and drive from a belt.

Added a Turbo to my 3B.
Check the motor is ok first. Get a Compression check.
I had a 2 1/2 inch exhaust added to get the Heat away.
You need to keep the boost down. 7.5 lb is ok 10 max.
use a boost gauge to measure that. The thing is that you won't get any boost at idle and at best it won't be to max until 2000 rpm.

i was only looking at running 6 or 7 lb anyway an ive decided on a 2 1/4 on the back of the turbo jst till the flexi bend so about 300mm of 2 1/4 then 2 1/2 back 2 a free flow muff, knowing me it'll b a nice wee stainless with a droopy tip on it at the back end 2. wont putting a intercooler b a waste of time at only 7 pound?? create lag bt not enough air flow 2 realy make a difference??
i cant think of any other way of gettin sum extra power outa the 3l.
its on 35"s an extreamly slow and kinda scary pulling out onto a 100k rd.

Talk to Kaiapoi Diesel Repowers in Kaiapoi - near Chch... they've done at least one that I know of - lowered compression is a must. The one I drove was nice - a very nice conversion for the motor, lots of go (on 33's anyway).
Just use the CT20 (2.4TD) turbo like everyone else would be my advice - not the best turbo in the world, but they seem to work well in that application

A mate of mine down in Westport did a similar thing to his 2.8.
Put the whole set up from the 2.4 (2lt) onto his 2.8. Simple bolt on job and made a hell of a difference for the small amount of effort.
He left the settings on the turbo the same, and didn't touch the compression. Hardest thing was the oil feed to the turbo.

I would not recomend just bolting everything up, it will work but can damage the engine, at best or reduces the life of the engine by about 30% and head gasket shops become your friend.
I had a look and you can get thicker head gaskets for the 3b from Aussie, they must be available here too.
Remember a 3B has a Compression ratio: 20:1 and Normal cylinder pressure of: 30.0 kg/cm2 (427 psi) or more Minimum: 20.0 kg/cm2 (284 psi) then you will throw 6 psi of air at it before compression pushes it out to aroung 38 - 40 kg/cm2 (569 psi)
That is a lot for a head gasket.
I ran about that in a race car (2.2 Bar of boost) problem was getting off the line needed to drop the clutch at 3500 with antilag and if you fell off boost it was a pita, ok and I broke stuff, lots of stuff, OK I couldnt afford to run it and had to sell it

as for turbocharging have you consdered supercharging your 3.0L? i know at least two people, one here in westport and one in nelson who have supercharged their L series diesels. one is a 2.4 roller rocker running 4Lbs and the other is a 3.0L (5L) with a 2.4TD boost compensator running 10Lbs. both go extreemly well. they both used toyota MR2 superchargers and the bends out of them work a treat if you mount them where you're air con unit normally mounts.

yeah jerome's truck goes really well and so far no problems, his mate has also turbo'd his 2.8 with a turbo off of a nissan terrano and he runs 8-10Lbs aswell. although neither of them have run the 2.4T boost compensator, the've just tweaked the fuel pumps a bit, thats something i think should be used if you are going to turbo and engine. hope this provides a bit more insight into your quest for more power
