Hi Guys
I sold my Suzuki 1987 SJ413 a while back but am missing it now and would like to get a new one. I always liked the idea of getting a coil sprung SJ80 samurai and keeping it quite standard for daily driving. I was thinking about doing some basic mods like 30-40mm spring lift, 30” muddies, snorkel, headers, t-box gears and bars/winch. Are these trucks a good upgrade from the old leaf types. I got sick of fixing my old one so would like something that does not need as much maintenance and the old one was quite rough on the road. I won’t really be doing any hardcore 4x4ing in it but would like to have some fun in the weekends at the local rivers and forestry with mates etc. I don’t know much about the coily samurai’s so I have a few questions...
I have read the diff heads are different to standard samurai heads (and maybe weaker???), is it worth replacing coily diffs/axels to leaf sprung running gear?
How much will I have to lift to fit 235/75xr15 or 30” tires?
Are spring spacers certifiable in New Zealand?
Can I run spring spacers (30mm) and lifted springs (30-40mm) to get a 60-70mm lift? I don’t want a body lift.
Is it easy to find extended shocks or better to mount the shocks out of the springs in the front?
Can I put a 413 t-box in easily?
How much lift will require new dropped radius arms? (snakeracing)
Anything ells I should know about them?
Cheers,
Hamish.
SJ80 Questions
Re: SJ80 Questions
The coilys are completely different to a leafy. The axles/cv's are supposedly weaker, but will definately be strong enough for 30's. The front suspension isn't really a great design and a mod that can be done is fitting the jimny spring/shock mounts onto a coily chassis. You probably won't need new radius arms for a 2", but caster will be affected slightly. Yes a 413 transfer case can be fitted, I think you also need the arms, jackshaft and I think the flanges need to be swapped as well. It sounds like you want something similar to this:http://www.auszookers.com/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=402
Re: SJ80 Questions
That’s pretty much exactly what I would like to build. So the Jimny spring/shock mounts will fix most of the front suspension issues?
If the axles/cv's are supposedly weaker then would swapping in a set of leaf samurai diff/axle assembles be a worthwhile fix? Or would I not really have issues just running 30"s?
Re: SJ80 Questions
30's will be fine as long as you don't drive like an idiot
