advice on rust fix

Post by albundy »

Gidday guys,
have my eyes on a truck up qld way, lifted, turboed locked, gu diffs etc, etc, etc. Good price for the dollars for the mods done. There is some rust in the fire wall seam behind the brake master (see attached pic). It's a 94 LWB 4.2 turboed, intercooled Maverick/patrol.

It has some other minor rust around the rear barn door window and surface rust on bonnett corner where she has hit a tree. Those are easy fixed. would like some comment on whether this is a big job to fix or worth the time and money to fix. The truck is a good 10hrs drive away so can't eyeball it directly. Otherwise she is in good nick, some minor panel dents which I can live with as mine was alot worse.

Its hard to tell but could be fixed, if it was me i would take any components out of the way open the seam up and sand blast it paint inside the seam and close it back up. weld any holes if need be.

Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

Hey Al, good to see you lining up another Nissan! and not going the 60/80 way. Thats quite common on Safaris, Ive repaired a few there and also my old whale had been repaired there too. What mr cruiser said is spot on, drill out the spot welds if you have to open it up, blast it or cut it out, some weld-thru primer on the insides. Weld it back up ,seal down the seam and give it some paint. :D

As it turns out under qld law the seller has to provide a current roadworthy certificate so that means he will have to deal with the rust issue if he wants to sell it. The only issue now will be getting whats called a blue plate, same as cert plate for the mods. Just a metter of going over the pits and getting an engineer to signoff the tyres, suspension etc. A little more homework to do yet.
