rear pinion/vibration help

Post by getsum »

hey guys...ive just bought a surf thats up in akl.. its a 92 ln130, 2lt,manual..

ive been told it has a driveline vibration.

doing some searching on here i feel confident(without seeing it) that is the pinion bearing...
it only vibrates in 4th/5th at cruising speed.

if i get it tightened up as a temp fix, how long do you think i can drive it befor eit destroys itself???

as i would like to get it home to the south island over 4 days..

if it can...is there anyone that could assist me to tighten it up?
ill be flying up on the 15th june, i pick it up that morning..
im hoping to get away that afternoon to head to katikati, then over to the fieldays, for 2 days, then south for home...

toughts?

the other option is i take the tools needed with me..
so what would be needed?

driveshaft flange bolts..14mm spanner?
pinion nut..socket and powerbar?? what size is the nut, a 32?

any help would be greatfull..

this will be my first 4x4 dedicated 4x4,so no shopping trips in this thing..just pure west coast hunting and bush bashing..

cheers

Hi mate sounds like it could be a crook universal in the rear drive shaft or another possibility is it's not disengaging the push button 4wd at the transfer case and or the front diff causing vibration at higher speeds. If it is the diff head they can whine and rumble for a long time but once they get loose enough to vibrate they crap out pretty quick.
I'm in palmy and I've got surf diffs and drive shafts and a workshop so give me a ring if you get this far and need bits.
Cheers Simon

its a very high possibility it will be the rear universal like the others have said, will need a vice and a shitty socket set for that one

Hey dude I had this exact problem and it was the driveshaft (it was vibrating under load in 4th and 5th) I replaced driveshaft and its good as gold now.

As for the 4wd problem I also had this happen to me (while I was in the middle of 4wding  ) I found that the clip had broken off my 4wd plug and the contacts were not touching enough to engage 4wd.

The plug im talking about is on the end of the gearbox were the transfer case is, If u slide under the truck about bang on the middle you will see it.

Cheers

the rear shaft was doing it??

will have a look at both today...

yeah it was mainly under load that it vibrated.
and the light would flicker...

strange...cheers for that

Yea the rear UJ had a little play in it and was just enough to make the whole truck vibrate under load in 4th and 5th
