Terrano snorkel design
Terrano snorkel design
Im looking at making my own snorkel, i have a snorkel head so now i just need to buy the piping. Has anyone made one before? with measurements etc for it?
And i hear with steel snorkels you have to paint the inside of it to prevent moisture sitting in it?

Check out this post of mine, http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=23250, I recently made a 3" mild steel one. Sourced from auto bend and slightly modified to suit my customising.
I blocked off both ends and poured a large cup of "Black Guard" in it, shook it around and emptied it. No rust issues now.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Shit that looks good! May i ask how much the pipe from auto bend cost? did you just tell them where you wanted the bends and they done it?

Looks good. How do you cut the holes in the gaurd? Its a once only chance to get it right =/
Re: Terrano snorkel design
I cut my guard and the inner with a hole saw. As i use them daily, some skill was involved not to break the centre drill or my wrist!
I have a big, grunty 1/2 inch chuck drill with the nickname "the widow maker" as it has broken 1 apprentices and a customers wrists. This task was not for the faint hearted or limp wristers
I'm just about to adapt a safari 3 inch steel snorkel to fit my Terrano
Going to throw away the plastic fantastic (yeah right!) I have now.
As vinceparts posted, he used 2.5 inch cause that's what the intake size was. IMHO, go the next size up, because the longer the turbo has to suck through the same size it turns into a restriction. Think about breathing through a straw.
Cheers,

Haha yeah i thought a hole saw would be the idea, iv heard of storys about breaking wrists with them drills =/
If your gonna get rid of your snorkel could i get it off you for a nice price? Just for the mean time anyway, Until i can make a 3" one up? I have heard about making the snorkel bigger than the intake.

Thanks.
I think it was around $180.
It was factory bent for Terrano trucks, I just had to modify it to suit where the shitty plastic one was fitted.

yea you are sorta right there, if i was to do it again id do it in 3 inch pipe , i also still need to put a proper snorkelhat on it, but hey for $55 minus the snorkel hat u cant complain and its saved my ass a few times now , cant say the same for my mates 2.8 dblcab lux,
any snorkels better than no snorkel,
as for cutting the hole i used a hole saw and as i wanted the snorkel to almost sit hard against the body lines i used a drill and file and made a pear type shape .
u13turbo......if your planning to make your own id try and guesstemate what kind of bends you need and drill the hole first and work back fom there, then that way u can make ur snorkel to fit the hole instead of making a pretty pipe up and drilling the hole in the wrong place,
this is what i did , but this may not be everyones way of doing it , its only an option

Sure was cheaper, I sold the old plastic one for the same $
Before you cut your hole on the outside, if you want it snug like mine, make a cardboard template for the hole and trace this onto the guard, measure twice, cut once! As said it is an oval hole in this respect. I too used a jig saw with the finest toothed blade I could find.
Hole saw for the inner guard and use cutting compound, there can be 2 layers to cut through. Centre it from the outside first and then drill/saw cut from the inside.
I used some rubber beading to line the cut surfaces so the steel pipe doesn't wear/rub/vibrate on the holes and RTV'd the rubber to the steel.
A couple of stand-offs for the tube to be supported along the guard and one onto the A pillar. I kept the hat from my old snorkel, but they are only about $50 to buy.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Re: Terrano snorkel design
The last one we did we welded a flange to the snorkel where it goes through the guard. This was then able to be bolted to the guard. Does three things, means the hole through the guard doesn't have to be perfect, is a really strong mounting point and the snorkel does rub in the hole.
Also definitely go bigger than the intake of throttle body as said above. A good way to think of it is your graden hose. Out of the tap there is heaps of flow, fit one hose and it reduces and another on and the flow drops to very little. Air is just a fluid so the same thing happens.

Re: Terrano snorkel design
yea as above, im sure its obvious but for those that are new to hole saws the angle is important and because the gaurd sits at a different angle to the inner gaurd just mark it and take the gaurd off so you can do one at a time. Its also nice to clamp a bit bit of wood on the inside of the metal you are going through so the centre drill bit locates nicely and doesnt wobble around all over the show. Get some of the rubber trim that goes around holes (similar to the stuff that goes in winfdow channels or door rubbers) and primer the outside of the cut before you put the rubber on as no doubt it will be a little rough with a bit less paint.
I always buy 3 inch exhaust bends from atlas steel they were less than 15 each last time and they come with good lengths of straight attached so with 3 of them you would have enough to make the full thing.
Take pic's

Sweet thanks for all this advice! I will try get onto it soon. Might make it from the $15 bends as that will be the cheapest.

Re: Terrano snorkel design
im pretty sure you will do it with 2 bends but i bought 3 so i could use the bits of straight because i was 2 jew to buy a full 6m length of straight pipe when i only needed half a metre or less
This is the first one i ever made a few years back, it was the first thing i ever welded and was a bit of a rush job. It did the job but the last ones have been a bit tider. Nice easy and cheap. ps. I know it wasn't a terrano but you get the idea..

That truck was a very very budget ruff job so I didnt care but you can get nice snorkel hats and paint them up and they look great.

Re: Terrano snorkel design
plenty of people say autobend but i found unless you were a trade customer with an account they had no interest dealing with small customers. Atlas steel is out wigram, google the addy if u cant find it let me know ad the bends were good and cheap. what size top hat do ya have? most i found were smaller than 3 inch so went to the truck supplies place to get a 3 inch one.

Re: Terrano snorkel design
Here a pipe that I brought off our local exhaust shop. Cost $110 from memory which it is 3" mandrel bent, but they come in different sizes as well. It was great because all the pipe was there we needed and all the bends.
I know its not a Terrano but just giving you a few ideas, and hope it mabey helps you out.

Re: Terrano snorkel design

Check out my post when I did my snorkle, the Autobend is just the bent pipe, nothing else. I think I have some of the flexi hose left over if you need some for the airbox.
Feel free to come and have a look at mine first if you like.

There was a lot of mucking round involed but 75 for hat and then 200 for pipe i think and 12 for a joiner.

If you are Akl based the cheapest supplier of exhaust tube and bends are Segedin Truck and Auto Parts Ltd
53 Andrew Baxter Drive.
They have several different sizes including 3 inch.
Almost half the price from Auto bend or Chase.
Give them a ring first as the stock moves pretty fast.
