Does the transfer case bind up when you're doing u turns?
Just to let you know, I bought the lift kit I linked to in the other thread, it came to $970 NZ all up but the theiving NZ Govt added $200 GST and customs tax on it as it was worth more than NZD 400, if you do buy out of the states see if the seller can undervalue the goods. Cheers.

If you surface freight it I was told its classed as commercial goods so is always subject to those extra charges. Can get away with it if you air freight but you get stung hard for weight. My last too purchases were $575 and $680 NZ and didn't have to pay anything extra when air freighted it.

They will charge you GST when the amount they can recover is over $50.
Best & safest way to avoid paying is to get them to send parts over in several smaller packages. If you get them to lie about the value they could confiscate the goods.

Not quite. Coming by sea means the wharfies at each end have to have their cut for handling, then the shipping agents need their bit and so on. So many people handling so cost goes up.
Most vehicle parts do not have any duty payable but GST is and it is paid on the total cost including shipping.

Hmm dunno about that, I've bought a few parts for my Falcons over the years from Aussie (nothing more than $200 each) and have never been stung, my flatmate bought XJ shocks for a 3" lift off ebay at the start of the year for about USD 180 and wasn't charged when they landed. Good point about under valuing the goods cheers.

does get a little funny feeling on full lock, but i also have a clicking cv which i did not hear on test drive
Re: Finally got a ZJ in the driveway
the gst thing is a bit hit and miss. Simply, sometimes you get lucky, and sometimes you dont. Ive had a soft top in for $800 that the hit me $60.00 on, and Ive had other items ranging from $400 NZD to $1100 NZD and theyve arrived on my doorstep without a word said. All delivered to my work address.
I have gotten parts off one supplier that label the items as a birthday present from Uncle Jed, dunno if that helped. some will devalue the item, however from the US they are also committing some federal crime if they do so, so some may not be willing to help in that manner.

Re: Finally got a ZJ in the driveway
I have also found the upcharges on imports to be very much hit and mis . Some times the stuff just arrives at the backdoor no GST or charges at all. Other times you get the call for the credit card number for all sorts of charges.
The best freight method from the US is to pop over and put it in your suitcase. The next best is to get the vendor to send via the USPS Ie the us postal service however the vendor will piss and moan as to do this they have to go take the stuff to a US post office. Often the stuff just turns up with the regular mail no upcharge however there is I think a 70 Lb weight restriction also the freight cost is minimal
The next best is Fedex or UPS however the freight cost is high and you will definitly get hit with GST etc
Do not use DB Schenker at all if you can avoid them they will hit you with all manner of charges and the net upcharge will be double Fedex or UPS

Re: Finally got a ZJ in the driveway
All my stuff has been either via UPS or FEDEX and its was only once with FEDEX that I copped a gst/customs/whatever they want to call it fee.

Re: Finally got a ZJ in the driveway
I always use USPS and their flat rate boxes. Never been stung...yet.
Re: Finally got a ZJ in the driveway
I got some custom pistons from the states recently (via USPS) when they got here the docket had Sample value $8.99 on it. The pistons cost $1500.00
Didn't even ask them to do that. Come to think of it I got some forged rods awhile back and they did the same thing.
