"2nd" tyres - recomendations

Post by drive it ... »

I'm driving 93 Prado LWB running 33x12.5x15 BFG MT's. Looking at getting a 2nd set for harder off road use. BFG's work well in canterbury gravel rivers but the most common tyre failures I've seen are ripped sidewalls, either on alpine scree or roots/rocks in west coast bogs. :(
Alpine stuff I think just keeping pressures up a bit is the answer, but I'm thinking heavier cross plys are the go for the coast?? Bearing in mind the 3hr drive over the hill and I can't be bothered dragging a trailer.
$700 set of swampers on TM look intereting but I think they're the radial ones?
Thoughts / opinions....

i've run plenty of radials (kumho, bfg, cooper, bridgestone, yokohama, hankook etc ) over the years and have found if you want a tough bush tyre you cant go past a swamper or a simex .I run simex at the moment and have found them tough as .You dont get the same feedback as you drive but they dont gash sidewalls as easily as radials .my 2 cents worth :D

Cheers wjw & sig. Do you do 3hr+ road trips on the X plys or trailer them?
I briefly had use of a VX on 35 creepys which were OK on the rd but thats a hell of a lot more truck holding them down. I don't want to end up with wheels I never use 'cause they're too rough on the drive over to be worth it. :( Yeh I know - personal preference...

I bought the triple block for that very reason, they are ok on the road. I certainly wouldn't drive on silverstones to the coast. Had enough of them driving round town for 6 weeks.

Well it took a while but I finally picked up a set of Simex JT 2, near new with white spokes for $1400. Pretty happy with that :) Rims didn't clear my brakes tho so had to get tyres change on to spare rims I had.
Tyre whine is a bit like a plane take off - was pretty cool on the way home but might get old on a trip to coast.
