winch size for a surf

what is the smallest size winch that should be used on a surf??

seeing as theres so many different sizes out there.

a surf weighs what,around 1600kg-1800kg??
so 3500kg rating or would it need to be more to pull it out of a bog/up an incline??


im looking at getting a winch as myself and some mates go hunting round these parts,and usually only take the one truck...

My suggestion is 8000lb-9000lb ideal size. (3600kg-4100kg)
Others may suggest other sizes but the size above is what most 4wheelers use (not all) they are also best investment for resale value in the future.

would be the go. although you may want to look at a hand winch in case the truck shits its self completley or you need to pull it sideways/ backwards with no power etc. Like this

Then you can chuck it in any truck, by the sounds of it your not building a winch truck so it will only be a back up so speed shouldnt be an issue etc.

id go for the turfir as it pulls in any direction and theres no fitting or electric leeds required.

as you said you go in by your self then if you are going in that far the turfir becomes to much work then you should also be looking at having another truck as well

With a double line pull the 3500kg (7700 lb's) would probably be fine but for the money the 9500 lb would be my choice for an electric winch. I would still get a hand winch I reckon they are the best back up when you are out alone, and as said above if you are going places that you won't get through with a hand winch then it is probably playing with fire going in with one truck anyway..

BUT lads wil be lads and when you do go and get an electric winch, expecially a 9500 man can you go places then then, but a comes back to the old rule, best to go in with a buddy

Has anyone on here had one on there truck? Any feedback?

Id fit a Runva 12000lb to take the load off your battery and alternator and also as they are rated on the first layer of rope on the spool and not the last layer Big is better

what he said, i have one of them and its nice and fast and on a LR which is the same weight as my surf I'd say. I also have a runva 12000 pound on the surf, never use it but when i have its been wicked, but slower than the 9500 Q.

If you are going to set up a manual one as well, and as most guys carry a hilift type jack, why not just throw some chains in to convert that to the manual winch, or can nobody here remember doing that?

yes hilifts do work but with only 1mtr of travel you will also need two truck tiedowns to hold the vechile as you reset and as most trees are 10+mtrs away things start getting very busy verses a comealong with 1 cable and the winching block it is a lot simplier

just on a side here i havent used my comealong for years now but never go into the bush with out having my trusty hilift with me. that jack has got me out of so many suituations
