Malaysia - 27 March Charity Trip to Kampung Rekom

Post by geckoadventure »

It's not NZ but you might be interested in the trip.

Well its taken 5+ weeks to organise from a little posting I stuck on the ORS 4x4 forum in Malaysia "25-27 March Charity Trip to Kampung Rekom" the most remote Orang Asli Village in West Malaysia at 970 Meters up and 52k from the blacktop into the jungle and they have a blindness problem with 30% of the 40+ inhabitants of the village suffering hereditary blindess.

The guys on ORS got the order of goodies needed in Bahasa from the village using the jungle telegraph. My goals were to collect 1,500Kg of rice, + cooking oil, clothes and tools etc.

7 ORS vehicles answered the call and people freely donated goodies to my house and to their friends.

Suddenly we had a group called MLM (My Landy Malaysia) offered to chip in and help they also had a contact for goodies little did we know how much and who from and it was just awesome.

4-5 last minute vehicle pullouts leave us with 10 vehicles and 23+ people still going. We still have 2 cubic meters to pack in NO WAY its going to fit and its left in my house for next trip.

Anyway suddenly its almost the day - I have NO TRUCKS. I'm supposed to be taking GREEN (1KZ LJ77) and Kantha will drive it and the customers and the VOLVO C304 - However Volvo still does not have the promised new front windows installed so its discarded and the ever reliable DEATSHTAR (BJ75) steps in. Both have rego expired so one day before the trip I get it all organised and they are prepared the night before with a marathon 2.30am pack and prepared and checked. For the mighty BJ75 TROOPY (known as YELLOW or DEATHSTAR to fellow offroaders) it's an awesome request.

We stuff into it 710Kampung of RICE, 20 Kampung of Sugar and SALT, 100+ liters of cooking oil, 100kg+ (3 boxes at 48kg) of SARDINES, other boxes get tossed in and then 2 boxes of camping kit and the rest, spare battery and my personal clothes are tossed in GREEN along with the fridge. Deathstar sits visibly lower on the road and a test run proves MAN IT'S HEAVY. We work it out to be carrying some 1100+Kampung of kit including the two passengers and fuel amkeing it gross out over 3,400kg.

Anyway round comes friday morning and I have too much to to so a day off work is called for.

6pm and i'm back home waiting for everyone to arrive at 8.45PM. They never arrive and all arrive 9.30PM we are going to be so late. 6 4x4's at my place craming in the last of the kit damn it still 2 cubic meters of stuff left on the floor. Finally 10.35pm we leave GeckoAdventure HQ heading toward Gua Musang in Kelantan some 279kilometers from here. ETA now 4.30am 4 hours late and it also means we miss camping at the cave yet again.

Next RV is Gomback toll and 4 landies scoot past us at the RV and keep going. We catch them in time to have a meeting 100k up the road at RAUB were we all get to meet for the first time and say HI.

Damn the convoy is now
1 TROOPY (DEATHSTAR) 13B-T
1 Pajero modified L047 to fit V series 3.5 petrol and running gear.
1 Diahatsu/Hilux mongrel - god help it- it has a 3L in it.
1 Stock 22R LC II
1 1KZ/Auto powered LJ79
1 D110 Defender
1 D110 two door defender
1 D110 Defender
1 DISCOVERY - AUTO
1 XJ JEEP

The pic is the first meeting at RAUB - yes stop laughing I am a driver a Landrover.
Image

Image

After a long slow drive I arrive first in Gua Musang and refuel at 4.30am then we have a meal and wait.

Refueling at Gua Musang 4.30am in the morning and we decide to camp at the restaurant and not GUA Cha some 35k away. So its sleeping bags out on the tables and we fall asleep for 3 hours.
Image

Image

Yup DEATHSTAR is very heavy.
Image

Why are these guys laughing at 4.30am - hahaha we are 4 hours late.
Image

Oh yeah a couple of carpet commando's also along for the ride.
Image

The 7.30am scene outside the restaurant. Notice all the bonnets up on the landrovers hahaha.
Image

The early morning cloud hangs over the limestone hills at Gua Musang.
Image

In the distance the cloud is so low its gotta be raining.
Image

Air down point 25k along the dirt track after this we cross the mighty Sungai (River) Perias and the serious stuff starts.
Image

GREEN and one of the Bangalore brothers from India who were back for more non IT adventure.
Image

Then it rained on the way in making the track slippery and "FUN" to drive. Several long sections of mud raise concern as to how far we will get.

The convoy snaking its way to Kampung Dandut the 3rd obstacle on the trip so far.
Image

Rambo's rare 2 door defender
Image

In the clouds at 450 meters 1k from Kampung Dandut.
Image

Pajero climbing the last slope to Kampung Pendat Baru (new). This obstacle too us almost an hour to clear the 10 4x4's.
By this time we were 4hours behind the rough timetable and losing time at every obstacle. A 3 hour drive had so far turned into 6.

DEATHSTAR waiting as the ANCHOR point.

Adnan's LR about to get stuck on the rear diff protector.

1pm Kampung Pendat Baru (new) the village at the lookout with no water supply we dropped of food and clothes here.

Then the trouble started we reached a place known to us as SS0 which is a warmup section for the next 1k of tougher driving. The HEEP goes first and makes it next we decide we need a LOCKER and ANCHOR vehicle - DAMN thats the DEATHSTAR and it takes over 30 minutes to winch and drive the Deathstar up the filled in ravine the smell of burning clutch fills the air.

Epic! Love reading your trip stories man. Keep em' coming!

Awesome that people were generous enough with donations to have some left over for another trip.

Got to ask though, you say 'new' in the captions. Why is it built in a location without running water? It is an old village that has been rebuilt due to natural disaster or something? Or is it new, as in a replacement for an old village that was replaced way back, but not actually chronologically new as far as being built recently goes?

Edit: Crap. Didn't mean to post yet. Right in the middle as well. Tried to delete it but you were to quick to post again. Sorry.

The Next SS SS0A was even tougher this time the road was gone and we had to climb the old CLIFF.

The RUT was damn deep who dropped a bomb here.
Image

Clouds all around means we are over 600 meters up.
Image

Then disaster struck we all cleared SS0 and it was 7.05PM 15 mins of daylight left and we need food its been over 11 hours since our last meal but with 5k left we elect to push on and we were at SS1/2/3 the most difficult of all the SS's. Narrow one slip and its 2-3 days to recover the vehicle.

First Annuar in the HEEP calls for help I'm on SS3 at the LOG one wheel over the edge need help quick the track is too narrow. I'm stuck at the back in DEATHSTAR now unable to help. Then another call over the Radio Adnan in the Defender in stuck on SS1 a few inches from the edge we cannot move need urgent help. We walk up from the truck at the back for the 100 meter walk and I get as far as the stricken LR - sigh it's going to be a long nite we try and winch off a boulder no avail the boulder moves trapping the strap we call for a vehicle to reverse down the slippery slope and it takes us over 45 minutes to use a hi-lift jack to roll the boulder to free the strap without damaging it. Meantime a LR struggles to reverse backwards and get sufficient traction to anchor the stricken LR. 50 minutes later it is winched to saftey. The HEEP is rescued and reverses 80 meters backwards down to SS2 where 3 vehicles unload their kit. Damn we are 5k from the target and we fail we are all gutted. All the trucks turn around and meet me back down at the back where a flat part of the track allows us to camp at 690 meters. Its 9.30pm by the time we clear all the vehicles then I realised we missed earthhour. Adzhar cooks up dinner while I cook the rice. We feed the two Kampung Rekom Orang Asli guys who helped us at SS0/1/2/3 and they head of into the dark to walk the last 5k to their village. They will be back in the morning.

We are all in bed by midnite exhausted.

The villagers arrive 9am after walking the 5k from their village down to meet us. They carried blowpipes and bubu's (fish traps) as presents. The chief who is blind is 5th from the front. We share breakfast and hot chocolate with them before they hand over presents and explain to us their only transport a motorbike they won in a lottery draw and it will take them 2 weeks of walking to walk the 1,000Kg of rice. And from the MLM boys I could not believe it 3 Landrovers chocked full of products from Nestle. Noodles, Milo (chocolate) and many other items of food. Deathstar by this time was now relieved of 500Kg of rice and left with 200Kg of rice for another village. If the pic looks like united nations group it is. Over a quick cup of coffee we decide we will come back with another motorbike somehow for them later in the year. We hand over baby formulae, dried milk, repaired chainsaws, parangs, digging tools and much much more clothes etc.

I got given a minature blow pipe, darts and 2 wooden axes which are now being framed to hang up at home.

After a discussion with the chief we are coming back in July (first weekend) and we are trying to obtain 3000 rubber plants which we will help them plant - The VolVO has to be runnign to contain all 3000 rubber saplings. We agree to help them were we can and we will try and bring them another motor bike. I think this time we will stay up there for a dy and this could be a very good CSR project to watch evolve over the next 5 years.

At 690 meters we are in the clouds.

The return journey SS0A is a lot easier its now dry.

We then dropped into Pos Simpo 10k below Kampung Rekom yes the bangalore brothers look like they're shooting a bollywood movie.

Then it was time to head down to Sungai (River) Perias for a quick swim before heading of to last nites destination the crashed CK47 at a secret location which I know.

When we came back to Pos Simpo there they were distributing the goods we gave them and we got a very big thankyou for giving out of our own pockets.

Then it was down to Kampung Pendat where the first question was "Cicak" ("GECKO" as I am known to the Asli's) where are the doctors. I saw kids with cellilitus and skin problems and severe malnutrition - damn I need to come back and help these people also. I'm wrenched I will find a doctor and bring one back.
Image

Image

Image

Image

Group photo and then the two groups split the Landy boys head back to Kuala Lumpur and we all head off following DEATHSTAR to the secret waterfall and crashed CK47 some 1-2 hours away and we are almost 24 hours late than the plan.

In answer to your questions.

the Baru (new) village in this case was made to "exxpand" Kampung Penat which was all BAMBOO and further of the track

For some reason someone decided to build Kampung Penat Baru on the top of a hill and NO water supply. Normally htey source clean water from above. . Both villages exist however the BARU one is looking very poor.
