Lift (for Dummys)

Post by grey »

Can someone just explain the basics to me? New to all this so excuse my ignorance..

Looking at stock Samurai's that I'll want to put bigger mud tyres on. I've seen pretty cheap lift kits on trademe & the like, would this be all I need to do & would it at least be sufficient to be usable? Not talking for serious offroad stuff although I would kinda like to have it capable so just depends on costs etc.
What would I need to do to get it looking like this?? - http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =372297293 - Is it just like the larger rims/tyres that give it the wider stance?? Or do you use spacers or something?

firstly it depends on weather it is coil or leaf sprung.
link you posted up was of a coil sprung zook.

normal method is a 2 inch suspension lift to start.
any more and serious suspension setup and steering modifications are required.
then cut the guards or fit a body lift to clear the size tyre you want to run.
Add large offset rims for extra track width and stability .

few other things to keep in mind, larger tyres mean your gearing is going to suffer.
and the higher you lift a zuk the higher the chance of flopping it on it's side.

that's the basics of it

You don't need a body lift to run 30x9.5 tyres but you will need a lift for 31.10.5 tyres. Get a set of 8inch wheels and some 30x9.5 and lifted springs (assuming it is leaf sprung )and you will have what that truck has.Remember that your tyres tred has to be behind (under and not sticking out) your wheel archers.Body lifts need to be certified. If you want to re-power you Samurai with a Vitara motor you will need a body lift to clear the bonnet.Oh and a cert.

Thanks to both, think it's starting to make sense. When did they change to coil sprung? Is it from the new shape like in that pic? Not going for the one with knackered motor I posted about before, prob going for a '95 I've seen (would it be leaf sprung??)

Thanks

Go leaf if you can, easier to modify and more parts out there.Samurai's are wider than sj413's hence the bigger guard extentions .Coily truck parts are hard to find.Get a truck that's already been modified and certed and save yourself some $$$

Ok, pretty sure the one I'm going for is leaf sprung, so where would I get what's needed for the suspension lift?

Pretty much given up finding a nice modified one, missed the few I've seen over the last couple of months. Seem way overpriced to me but I guess that's what people are willing to pay.. must be fun toys then?!
