Whats the chances of organising a Chch Beginners day?
Whats the chances of organising a Chch Beginners day?
I for one would love to come and meet some local people and get to know some new areas, but the problem lies that I have a fairly stock (ok, so it is stock) Safari. I dont have huge tyres, I dont even have mud tyres (I have an 80/20 from memory)
I have standard tow hooks, which I know arent the best.
So all up, I cant go anywhere too serious. Me asome work mates usually play up the Waipara river, but you can only dive up the same river and banks so many times.
I know there are other 'noobs' that Im sure would love the opertunity to come meet some new people and learn a few things.
So whats the chances of arranging a fairly easy going (hey, Im not scared of adding a few more scratches or small dents to my truck) event where we can have some 'experiences'? Where we can talk to some locals and get some ideas on what club/s to join.
Ken
P.s, sat and sun 2nd and 3rd of Sept definitly out for me.
Oh, and please excuse me if I have missed something similar in a different area.

Well, a noob training day would probably be a good idea... although one of you doesn't want the 'Mak and the other doesn't want the Waipara... that limits stuff pretty much
I'd suggest the Waipara because it has some of everything you want, its close to me (selfish bastard, I know
) and its normally got less traffic than the Mak... plus it makes a good day out if you want to bring family along.
That 2nd/3rd Sep weekend is out for me too...
I'm keen to make part of a group to go play, learn some things and generally get stuck in mud, water and pea-shingle
IF I'm lucky my clutch will last that long, otherwise I might be riding shotgun with Rik (assuming he'd want to go play in his Hilux - he's been stuck the last two times we've been out
)

Sounds good smokey. Suggest we start from stringer's bridge and head down stream, you can do it without a snorkel, I have. That way there is all types of terrian to attempt. I have a variety of recovery gear so will bring it all for display. We could have a lunch break and go over all the gear. Good to demonstrate what happens when a rope breaks if anyone has an old one about to go. I was thinkng of running a day trip down the north side of the ashley on sat 9 sept if anyone interested. Beginners welcome as long as you have tow hooks. We'll get you through
The last training day we had was an absolute laugh

rain, hail, sleet or snow, we go!
I forgot to mention, that I have no probs doing the Waipara again, I'll do it a hundred times more in the future also, I just want to know how to do it properly!! hahahahah
So whats the story with certified tow hooks etc?
Ive got the factory ones on my truck, bent metal pipe at front, and welded D at the rear (yes, I know those ones arent all that safe on angles etc) but what is ment by certified?
I cant get my hands on a couple off 10+ ton trucks from work, just the hook type ones, but whos to say that they are mounted in a good place? (when I say mounted, I mean cabled tied on
)

Elmo , the wife might have the hangover but the day is SUNDAY the 17th .
Tow hooks ? certified tow hooks can be obtained from opps use the advertisers on this site , they should have a safe working load on them and be supplied with 8.8 grade bolts , some clubs are insisting on 10.9 or higher graded bolts . They should be bolted through the chassis or something substantial that is conected to the chassis ie; tow bar or strong bull bar . I can go over the vehicles on training day and make recommendations , but be prepared to get tow hooks fitted correctly for any trip after training day YOU WILL NEED THEM . If you want to do tow hooks before training day and are not sure , give me a call .

Certified tow hooks is a typo. What people mean is RATED tow hooks, ie it has at least a 10,000lb rating stamped on it.
Factory hooks, which normally have no official rating stamped on them, are unnacceptable to many organisations as there is no way of telling what strength they have - although I've never seen one bend or break. And the nice big grunty ones factory fitted to many LandCruisers are probably twice as strong as most of the cheap chinese 10,000lb ones we are all using now.
a steel loop is not acceptable as anything more than a tie-down or tow point - it should never be used for any sort of recovery.
Anyway, this day out will be a good chance to look at what you have, what you really need and what you can do - no point getting too stressed about the fitout on the truck as it sounds like it will be fine. We will start with vehicle checks to ensure those trucks coming have safe recovery points. If you have any doubt beforehand then maybe we could have a recovery point and pizza night to prepare...
One thing tho, if we start at the golf course and drive up to the bridge at the end of double corner road then thats a good spot for a BBQ, and those who want to go out from there can do so while the rest can carry on up to SH1 if they want to. Just a thought.

Rated tow hooks are intended to be of a higher load rating than your recovery strap ie: the strap breaks before the hook breaks off the vehicle and becomes a steel projectile flying directly at the other vehicle at a speed of up to 500kph on the end of the strechy strap. :pale:
No stress involved here, I was purely asking what was ment/accepted as it was a good time to bring it up.
I'll do my best to get some hooks and have them fitted. Always knew Id need them, just one of those 'round to it' jobs. Ive never really allowed myself to get in a situation where I may be the one that needed pulling out, but when you look back on it, there was plenty of places where that may have changed.
I look forward to the day!!

Used to be able to do so sans-snorkel with ease, however recent floods have created a few unavoidable holes which are pretty dicey, and some treacherous areas of pea-shingle. Went out for a rabbit shoot from Stringers to beach today, so can say this with some authority.
- Stringers to State Highway One bridge is what I would consider safe for new-B's + shiney training day (sans snorkels)
- State highway one bridge to double corner bridge has a few unavoidable deep crossings and some soft patches (snorkel recommended)
- Double corner bridge to beach necessitates one particulary deep crossing if non-snorkeled, and this is treacherously soft.
Happy too to help out on the 17th.

I thought that rated hooks were used as they were designed to bend open when overloaded, rather than having a higher rating than the straps?
Thought that was why a lot of clubs won't allow pintle hooks as recovery points.
Either way, you can buy these for the rear of a safari:
