Gday, for those who know the area, just up from Puketui Road/Tairua Stream on the Hikuai side there is a rest area, which has a track going down into the bush which has been used by 4wds and dirt bikes from the looks of it.
Its not the Stadia/Neasville track.
Does anyone know if using it is illegal, or who to call to find out?
Cheers.

If the rest area is the gravel pit, that track is not 'legal' as it crosses DoC land initially (and they have never approved vehicle use) and moves onto private land. The private land is the same parcel that can be accessed via the Stadia track on payment of a fee for the privilege.
The continued use of a 'backdoor' endangers the ability to retain the permitted 4x4 use.

Ben, I don't own any track but do act for the owners of the lands that Stadia runs on. They are not willing to field requests from all and sundry but are willing to allow managed access for a fee.
The other track being referred to runs on that same land once it clears the DoC land. It's only fair that people respect other's lands.

If you go to http://wams.org.nz/ and use that map system, you will see that the 'straight' on that track is the DoC boundary and at the back end there is a blue line across to the river that marks the Pakirarahi 1 boundary.
For 4x4 the WAMS mapping is very useful.
