help with pre max winch

hey all,, anyone had any dealings with these winches....

got one but its a bit sad on it......got the click click noise when you hit the remote... solenoids look good ,so gave it a wee love tap and it started to work , be it slow but...............then stopped again...... jeep did get drowned awhile back but winch got forgotten about as had trans issues , seems they don't like water either.....had been used once since drowning and worked fine ..... any thoughts , or just pull apart and have a lookee....

If the winch has been that wet and is making funny noises, open it up and clean it. The motor brake and prob gearbox will be full of water or the nasty thing it leaves behind RUST

cheers mate,,bit slack when it came to acting on it......will clear coffee table and pull apart tomorrow night....another reason not to lend ya 4b out...............

I'd be pulling it apart and checking the Motor brushes as it sounds like they are not making contact with the armature anymore. If the solenoid is clicking it is normally working, just no power getting to the contact points on the winch motor. If water and mud have gotten into the motor, you may need to see if you can get a new set of brushes and a new carrier?

I'd replace the bearings well you have it apart or at least check them for play.

If you hold the remote button down do you get 1 click or does it go crazy and keep clicking away until you take your finger off?

One click means the solenoid is working, if it goes crazy it could be stuff!!

winch has only been on for about 3 months , was new when fitted,,so everything in there still looks new but um just a bit rusty.....how hard to pull apart from this step and whats best to use for cleaning....

Looks like the motor case is still attached to the mount plate. Seperate the two carfully and the armuture will fall out. There is another brearing at the other end too. Once apart clean it all up with some Rost off (Wurth product) and fine emery or wet and dry, be a bit careful around the armuture. The brushes are the same just clean them up carefully. I would replace the bearings the one you show looks stuffed. They are pretty generic and should be pretty cheap

Lesson, next time winch goes under water, pull it apart. My guess is the brake in the centre of the drum is full of rust too, and I would be pulling the end cap of the gearbox too, none of these winches are very water proof.

cheers meatc,,, will pull it apart and clean....lesson learnt... ..in all honesty winch was forgotten about as had a dead starter ,sick trans ,sick power steer,sick electronics,bent frt bar, plus all the other shit that goes with a drowned 4b...oh yeah and a sick owner for lending my pos out in the first place....

Was there any seals between the motor end cap and gearbox end cap to the drum?

Do you have any pic's of the seal's?

have only popped top off as in pic,,,was tight but no seal... will post pics as i pull apart ..pics may come in handy as i put it back together......know idea what I'm doing , but that's half the fun...

Unless its completely stuffed try to get away without pulling the brake out of the drum, they are pre loaded and can be a bit%h to put back together. But if you do happen to pull it there is info on the net to re tension it before putting it bag together.

one end done...... popped the top for gears off, this end had a seal...but yeah water.....how the hell do i go about cleaning that mess up...

Soak the parts in Mineral Turps or something like that. Use a small paint brush or old tooth brush to help remove the old shitty grease. Then rebuild with Inox mx8 Grease and RVT the joins when you put it back together. Use a oil and grease resistant one.

Be real careful if you use some sand paper to clean the contacts on armature...sometimes the sand on the sand paper conducts electricity & it can get between the armature segments & short them out.

Make sure you don't over pack the grease when you're putting the gearbox back together, I usually fit the drive shaft back in and turn it with a power drill to work the grease around the gears properly and then add alittle 80/90w gear oil and do the same again. On some of our harder working winches I've added a grease nipple to the gearbox end to help make it easier to keep grease in the first drive gear and bushing.

We have one that is doing over a hundred winches a day!!

yep been told about the too much grease thing,,,, worked the gears heaps to move grease around...had it running sounds fine and seems sweet as....will mount back up tomorrow if have time and give it a good test....how often should ya be pulling it down and servicing,,,thanks again for the help man...

It all depends on how you are using it
If it's been getting a hard time and you know its been under water and winching the chances are that you should check it, if you do this from time to time you will get and idea on when it really need's it and be able to stop to much damage happening

The best thing is to just clean it down after you've been out off roading and then spray some WD40 or Inox spray over it to help prevent water getting in well its sitting around.

A little bit of maintance goes along way!!

I wouldn't put any grease in it at all once you get them nice and clean.

Moreys Heavy duty oil stabiliser is the trick. Its like treacle. I have been using it in mine since I got it, it completely repels water. Take the gearbox off the winch, pour the water out give it another squirt then put it back on. Water hasn't touched any gears yet.
