another a frame update wanted

Post by BigRedCruiser »

Looked around on the forum but cant find anything recent on this.
Tried looking online but ltsa and aa want to hide the truth or iv got internet blindness haha
Is it still legal to a-frame an unregd no wof jimny as long as its in safe condition to do so?
What defines safe condition?
or am i better off to get a lil trailer made up?
or saving a lil extra to buy a road legal jimny and keep it ligit and certed?
About to jump into the awesome world of a mortgage  its my last bid at freedom  so a cost effective option would be great thanks guys!!!

i asked this q of NZTA back in 09 this was thier response:

Good morning Euan

Thank you for your email dated 10 May 2009.

A vehicle temporarily under tow is not required to be registered, licensed or warranted – but must be in a safe condition to be towed with an A-Frame. We recommend that a safety check is carried out on the towed vehicle to ensure it is fit to be towed, that the towing equipment is in good order and that safety chain/s are correctly applied.

I hope this has been of assistance.

the motor caravan accoc is usually the most up to date on all this, but as far as i knew it has the same laws applied to it as flat towing
if u use a light bar and double chain it, that usually keeps the coppers happy

I used to have tail lights hooked to my last couple of zuks and that was about it for a-framing(apart from safety chain of course), i towed them to rallywoods from here a few times no police issues :)

outstanding so if i get a light bar like those ones from super cheap auto for trailers? and a saftey chain and the vehicle wont fall to bits its alright? Iv read a bit about how towing with an aframe really affects the handling of the tow vehicle. is it really bad or just like a usual cheap trailer thats been overloaded?

ive heard of a few guys that just get some trailer cable and clip it into the front lights etc and then just plug it into tow car eliminating a light bar, that is if you've still got lights on the rear of the truck

the only problem i can see with a framing is if you break something at least with a trailor you can still get it home

just something to think about

what do you guys think about those half trailers?think they're called chariots?all you need is something to lock up the steering if you broke the back end,im toying with the idea of making one up with tool box on it as well

I've wired up a trailer plug to the front of the jeep running to the rear light and indicators and have a second removable lead long enought to go the lenght of the A frame, like rental trailers have

if truck raod legal when you buy it change reg to A then it is still regoed $65 per year last time I did mine.
