Kill switch for Electronically controlled Diesel (1KZTE)

Hi All
Need to put a "Kill Switch" in the 70 series Prado.(KZJ78)
To comply with winch challenge rules.

What has everyone done to comply?
Just interrupt the ignition supply. (Just like turning off the key)
Or interrupt ignition and isolate battery?

Thinking of using those nice E stop buttons...
But then again a big red key one would do, and make it harder for low life's to steal....

what about a fuel shutoff switch?
70 series prado (KZJ78) and 90 Series Prado (KZJ95)

Rule 9.3

A mechanical battery isolation switch for the battery(s) that provide power to the engine, ignition and fuel pump is required. The switch must be within easy reach of both the Driver and Co-Driver when they are seated in the vehicle with their full safety harness on. It must be clearly marked and its ‘on’ and ‘off’ positions easily recognised. This switch may isolate the negative terminal.

Note that it's not a kill switch that is required, but a battery isolation switch. So it should isolate the battery from everything rather than just the ecu/ignition or anything like that ...although you'll probably need to keep a live connection from the alternator to the battery to stop it from frying itself when you flick the switch while the engine is running (unless of-course you have an aircraft type regulator which can be switched on and off)

It is important that the alternator is wired to the battery side of the switch so that;
1, when you hit the switch the power supply is actually cut and;
2, the alternator is still connected to the batteries so it does fry the regulator.
It is really easy to just disconect the main battery supply but that will just disconect the battery and then the alternator will just supply power direct to the vehicle and it will keep running and also damage the alternator.

It is a case of having a switch to make it easy to cut power supply and relying on the fuse to ptotect the wire from the battery.
Nissan Terrano coilovers, turboed VH45, Safari axles, and some other stuff.

Try panpacific on waikumete rd glen eden, they may only sell to wholesale though. Or try AES (auto electrical supplies) on paramount drive henderson.

Is that a double pole switch that does the battery and the ignition?

Its a tripple pole (6 poles)
One for Battery.
One for either coil cut for petrol or fuel cut off diesel.
One to earth out the alternator via resistor when cutting engine so it doesnt blow diodes.

Whats the best way for a kill switch in a mechanical deisel?(terrano) my key is stuck in ignition, and its parked in town sometimes, Would be easy as fark to steal...

Your terrano will still have a fuel shut off soliniod.

That's all very good but just isn't neccassary. You are making something simple, complicated.

Fit a simple battery switch from any marine shop and wire the alternator to the battery side of the switch. Then when you turn it off it turns off all the power to the truck but the power from the alternator still goes to the battery. This means the alternator is protected and power is cut to the whole vehicle so it stops just like turning the key off.

This system works on EFI motors without damage to the electronics and I have used my setup (exactly as descibed) in an emergency stop with no dramas.

A switch to do the above is about $40 if you go for a marine on eand about $25 for cheap one.

I hear what you are saying, but wanted to disconnect battery using earth wire.
Got too many on the positive side.
And doing the earth is easier with respect to how my batteries are located and cable lengths.
If I did the positive I would need to get some cables made $$$.
I just happen to have one that would work.

I know its overkill, but thats just me..... I am a picky sh!t. :mrgreen:
Plus if I wire it, i know how to fix it if it plays up.

But keep those comments coming.......I love these forums for getting ideas

Yeah mate it is, But am planning a manual conversion eventually.
