Maxxis Bighorn MT762 or Kumho KL71? Which 33"s??? - POLL

Post by Stevo Magic »

So I'm planning to get my new tyres in the next couple of weeks and after a LOT of researching reviews and forums, I'm pretty set on getting myself either Kumho KL71 or Maxxis Bighorn MT762s.

The size will be 33 x 12.5 x 15. They're going on a Mk1 SWB Pajero, petrol. They'll be used on the road and in the mud, I only do about 10k per year tops.

I know everyone has their opinions and no doubt lots of people would suggest other brands, but I'd rather people just pick the one of these two they think is best and that's what I'll go with this time.

My focus is performance off road and durability on road (in relation to cost). Visually I like Kumho, if it's a deciding point.

Cheers! :D :D :D

Also, the best prices I've found for these in the size given is $320 for the Maxxis and $380 for the Kumho - anyone know where I might pick either up cheaper?

Bighorn on both counts. Road and Mud

Kumho will wear out quick and I haven't seen a set work well in the mud yet.

I've got further in mud with KL71's, but they wore extremely quickly. Have Bighorns now, not as good traction, but far superior on road, so would buy these again.

I appreciate the feedback guys :)

...but, as I've been seeing elsewhere there seems to be some conflicting reports on both tyres :? It's good to hear how people who've actually used them got on with them.

I guess given the lighter price tag the Maxxis is starting to make more sense, but I'm still keen to see how this goes.

Ive got KL71 on my surf..awesome tyre ..extremely quiet on the rd & great road manners ...as they are direction great for digging yourself out by driving backwards.
I always air up when back on the seal as this stops them wearing out.

I currently have bighorns on my prado, have had them about 25,000k so far and they are wearing VERY well! Between 1/4 and 1/3 worn! Excellent on the road and very quiet. Very good on shingle and in mud. Not as much on hard slippery surfaces.

2.2mm after around 30,000 would keep me nice and happy!

Previously, I've owned a set of Mudstars and a set of Kumho Powergaurds, with the Kumho serving me light years better in every aspect, particularly road wear, so I'm backing the brand... but I'm reading nothing but good wear reports on the maxxis too. I guess I will just sit back and see if I'm lucky and either tyre comes on a good sale in 33s somewhere.

- out of interest, what psi are most people running these tyres at on the road? & how often do you get an alignment done?? :)

My old man runs the Maxxis Bighorns on his Navara work ute. He is alway towing a trailer and at least twice a week he is towing 3 ton of trailer and digger. His ute has 58,000km on the clock with the tyres fitted when brand new and the tyre's still have around 8mm tread left.

That's pretty amazing and a decent sales pitch for me :)

Sounds like most people use the same sort of psi I do. I've barely ever bothered with alignments either, mainly to save myself a few bucks, but some guys have told me I'm crazy since using it off road can easily put them out of line then I might go racking up the road k's while unknowingly unevenly wearing.

All good. Unless some kumhos pop up on trademe or something I will get the bighorns then. Will come back and say how they went :) :) :)
