heya am after some advice on doing the big ends on a 80 series.
Have been told you need to take out the old caps and get every thing measured before you can get the new ones ordered?
Is this right? Was under the understanding you could just buy replacements and fit them without getting the other stuff done?Or am i comletly wrong.
If makes any diff the truck is religiously serviced every 5k with caltex delo400 and has about 350 000ks on clock

Re: big ends on a 80 series
Generic replacement bearings like ACLs come in set sizes like STD, +0.5 etc
Genuine Toyota bearings are matched to codes on the block, caps and rods
I had my engine apart and got my crank checked so I just bought STD ACLs, going the toyota way seems to be a pain, maybe someone whose done it could help

Re: big ends on a 80 series
have you done them before? are they std size? has the crank journals any wear?
these are all questions you need to ask and know. unfortunatly you cant know unless you have the sump off and the caps off ready to replace, then measure the journals while the cap is off and if std then replace with std bearing...
ACL bearing set about 80 buks, Toyota bearings about 80 per pot.

If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!

Re: big ends on a 80 series
as far as i know the sump has never been off and i have never done them before either.
So best bet is to takem off and check the size?
Also which is the best type to get? Is the acl any good or is the price diff because of toyotas knack of really over pricing parts?
Last question were can i source a set of acl caps from?

BNT sell the ACL's, I got genuine when I did mine, not realising the price difference at the time
