Hi all, what is a fair boost to run in a TD42, Was a non turbo however is now running a aftermarket kit and i seem to get so many different opinions on what is a safe everyday boost to run. Cheers Matt
What year? Earlier motors are capable of higher boost. It's also safer to run a pyro, rather than just going by numbers and winding the fuel and boost up
It’s a 93, I am running a external Wastegate and currently running 8 psi, Was wanting to run 1 bar 14 psi. Maybe a electronic boost controller? What’s a pyro?
Ah have been looking at them on TM. I only use it on the weekend and its just a toy, However one that owes my a lot of coin now! What sort of tempature shout the run as guages run from 0-9 http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-par ... 920444.htm
some of the atmo ones run thinner(?) pistons and i think they use smaller precups. with high boost and fuel to match they tend to crack the head and pistons regardless of what egt's they run.
there is a recommended max boost for the atmo conversions. if i was going to run 15psi i would be intercooling it.
Have alook at Moonlight racing for ya gauges fulla may save yourself some coin

Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.
If its just a weekend toy then definitely get the pump done (larger internals boost compensator etc), slap an intercooler and you're sweet to run atleast 20psi.
Egt wise, mine will creep over 750 on a long climb (only running 15psi of boost though) but thats the point where I will back off (although it is a 1hdt but similar principle). If mine was just a weekend toy then I would not hesitate to bump boost over 20psi and crank a whole lot more fuel and timing in.
If its a silver top then your pretty safe to wind it up but if its a black top i'd look at leaving it as it is. 1bar on a standard pump is as much boost you'd wanna run. If you want to run 1bar then i'd look seriously at running an intercooler as well?
Custom turbo by Steve Murch, and yes it’s a silver top. So many conflicting answers out there hence why I’ve asked they people who have done these mods!
Awesome guys, Thanks as i need all the help i can get!
got a mate with a 96 motor running 25psi with cummins top mount water to air intercooler had pump modified and big turbo gets to about 650 degress full noise up slight hill at 150kph my old truck was a 89 running 30psi modded pump would get to 800 fangin it,drove around the south island in april and went real good has had this set up for years no problem, has no intercooler, both trucks never had a engine problem, depends how much you want out of it
i run 14psi on mine its a 1988gq, motors had it since about 220k now 250k no worries, standard but rebuilt injector pump and was properly tuned on a dyno. runs really well, almost as quick as my hilux shagga which is about 126kws, wheel kws on the safari were about 88kws. definantly go for the intercooler, even if you throw a front mount air to air for starters, its better than nothing.

Mate I've got an 89 and run 14psi and for every day driving its fine. Pyro mounted in the manifold pre turbo gets to about 650. If you start to labour the engine (like high gear uphill) your temps will go up quick so avoid that if you don't have a pryo. Higher revs are better. Going to intercool to see what improvements I get but I think a boost compensator and 3 inch exhaust is next on the list. Deffinately get yourself a pryo installed and you'll see what temp issues you've got goin on in the engine. They can climb fast.
Whats peoples water temps getting up to? My after market gauge and sender gets up to 100 degrees then I back off, my factory gauge hardly moves but I hear they are useless. I was told this temp is too high. New radiator 9 months ago, will give it a clean out and try and find a turbo viscous hub and fan. Also after thoughts on intercoolers done the search but could'nt find proven results. Water to air? Air to air? subaru water to air? 4wd bits water to air? egts getting up to 700 then backing off, with 18 psi of boost.

For what its worth, I have both pyro's fitted one before turbo and one after in a TD27 which is a baby TD42
The post turbo pyro wasn't really worth having to be truly honest, sure it will tell you a temperature but it doesn't have a lot do with what is happening inside the motor as there are so many different factors such as turbo efficiency and heat soak in the turbo. This was meaning even though my Post-turbo pyro was showing a safe 300 degrees C the Pre-turbo had already surpassed 850 degrees C which is plenty hot enough for a TD motor. The post turbo gauge was so slow to react that it was only any good when you've been on full throttle for around 30 seconds (which is longer than it seems when driving on the road!)
I have set mine up now so that when I am towing I can hold full throttle and have a peak of 800 degrees C when I am in the right gear selection. Running 17psi boost and haven't had a problem in the 30,000kms it's been running in this manner.
My biggest problem is water temp and even with a new radiator I can only hold full throttle for around 2 minutes before it climbs over 100 degrees C, which isn't a whole lot of good when towing a 3ton trailer in a head wind. Have retarded the injector pump timing a bit which has hurt a bit of upper rev range performance but has helped a lot with the temperature.
mine ran normal temp most of the time and only started to get hot if held foot to floor for over 5min. Was running 14psi on factroy pump. As far as intercoolers go i you use mostly on road then i'd go for the biggest front mount you can fit. Will make big difference. If your running 15psi or higher without cooler your intake temps will be getting close to the 100deg mark.
im getting same problems with mine it has done up pump 12mm head and plunger td27 compencator air to air cooler my water temp wil cum up from just doin 110 ks in over drive I believe its coz im running 36s tho has any 1 tried alloy radiator? even my egts will cum up to 650 in over drive at 110 on flat road after a wile turn over drive off egts go strait bak to bowt 450 and the probe is pre turbo
