Re: wanted gun safe
legal requirements state it must be under lock and key.
you can lock them in a wooden box as long as its internally hinged and has a padlock...
or you can get the real deal gun safes from hunting fishing/gun city/outdoors supplies (my favourite) 5 gun safe with internal seperate bolt lock box for bugger all

Re: wanted gun safe
I just did my lisence recently and they frowned upon anything that wasn't a proper safe or gun lock. Best to go something sturdy than the bare minimum i reckon.

Re: wanted gun safe
You can use a gun rack if you are looking to do it cheaply.
You can get them off trademe and/or Gun City (usually about $40-50 i think). The disadvantage is they only hold a few firearms.
They are not as good as safes but are enough to get your firearms licence. Don't put it in a muppet place otherwise they will not accept it ie the living room wall.
The best place is usually a garage or wardrobe.

To Boon or not to Boon.
Re: wanted gun safe
I just use an old locker can pick these up for a few beer tokens.
Or just whack some MDF together, my mate did that and was fine.
If in doubt ring your arms officer, generally good buggers I have found.

For half the price of a cheap gun you got pretty much burgular prrof security.
I dont give a rats arse if YOU lose your guns, anybody silly enuff to lock em up in an MDF box doesn't deserve to have the rights to own one.
The only issue I have with you losing your gun(s) to a burg, is it puts another one into the hands of the crooks.
There they stay, for all the legislation in the world does not remove ONE from their hands.

Safe and cheaper and less hassell to chain and padlock it in the roof to the rafters.

how safe were the ones YOU lost to the burgs mate? did it matter that THEY were in a lock up??
mine were in a lock up and they got them ok... didnt get the bolts or ammo tho cos they were HIDDEN!
mdf box has about the same chance or better if you HIDE it real good.
anywho, a good safe is better, but a well made mdf box would be better than some of the cheap gun safes.

Having lost 15 to the bad bastids gives me a certain authority to comment. And NO, they was just stacked in the wardrobe, like silly dick, cos I didnt THEN know any better. The setup I had in Wangavegas was the best, cos it had the added security of being totally invisble as well as being bolted to the wall.
What we are on about, is to take EVERY precaution possible. an MDF box is hardly that.

Re: wanted gun safe
considering its behind a locked sliding bookcase wardrobe (if that makes sense ) should be pretty safe.
