Removing Holden V6 overheating problems and clutch issues.
Removing Holden V6 overheating problems and clutch issues.
Hey guys have had overheating problems with the 3.8 in the surf going up hills in low box mainly.
Have been to radiator shop and am being a ginea pig so here goes my progress as follows.
I am using a short petrol (3y-e) radiator, with a 45mm adrad 3 core in it.
used a supercheap fan for awhile, untill the blades got hot and warped over bumps stalling the fan, changed to a Adrad 16inch thermo fan. with adjoined blades (ring around the curcumfrence) and then a narva 40amp relay melted, go to a 70amp relay.
still no joy with cooling,
am changing the thermostat to an 82 degree and HI FLOW 60L a min extra, TT2003-180 Tridon thermostat, (to vit a VP, series 2)
plus will install a fan shroud to suck more air through, will be testing at the end of the week.
Anyone had clutch issues with Marks adaptors kits? using a V8 pressure plate. my pivot wormed out last time, will try locktite hi temp, used a marks landcruiser clutch master cylinder and have got a very hard pedal, any ideas on that?

Re: Removing Holden V6 overheating problems and clutch issues.
what exactly is wrong with the clutch setup?
how old is the kit?

I've got a hilux 3 core rad and vn commodore fan with shroud, keeps it cool fine, except when I accidently turn it off. These motors run pretty warm normally

Re: Removing Holden V6 overheating problems and clutch issues.
just a hard pedal, slipping, presume the pivot has wormed out. kit was bought last year, and yes there are some people with no trouble at all, witch is rather odd. i also dont belive i could squeze this setup into my surf.
Re: Removing Holden V6 overheating problems and clutch issues.
i have a ln65 with one electric fan runninga vnz130 3 litre v6 rad just had redrill mounting holes as it sat higher no probs
Re: Removing Holden V6 overheating problems and clutch issues.
i may have to look at taller radiator if the results dont go too well. has anyone seen these engine driven fans in action?

would save all that bloody fan switching!

Re: Removing Holden V6 overheating problems and clutch issues.
havent seen one of them but my old man had a guy make a spacer up and had to get a pusher fan as when the belt runs around the water pump pully it runs back to front
Re: Removing Holden V6 overheating problems and clutch issues.
looks as though it would be on all the time? You could just get a commodore fan from pick-a-part for around $30 and give it a go. Always good to be able to turn it off in deep water.
A lot of people don't rate aftermarket fans, me included, why not use the one the engine came out with?
Where are you located too?
ABC (Automotive Brake and Clutch) in Takapuna helped me with my clutch, really knowledgeable guys. Think mine is a Hilux clutch plate with standard commodore pressure plate from memory.

Re: Removing Holden V6 overheating problems and clutch issues.
that would explain a softer clutch, may need to change cylinder sizes. yeah i have heard alot of mixed results with no common fix for overheating, would like to put out a set measure that will work for everybody stuggling eith this issue including myself,

Re: Removing Holden V6 overheating problems and clutch issues.
My ln65 with a vs commodore motor used to overheat all the time. I removed the cheap electic fan and mounted a commy fan onto a frame bolted to the frame the radiator mounts to. This helped a lot, but what cured it was simply getting a new radiator cap, the original one must have been buggered.
Re: Removing Holden V6 overheating problems and clutch issues.
any picks of a factory commy fan mounted on?
Re: Removing Holden V6 overheating problems and clutch issues.
OK, put in lower temp high flow thermostat and put on fan shroud.
instead of 100k driving temp being 100-110 degrees it is now sitting at 90
idling it doesnt go past 110degrees
and up hill it stays good, altho i did get it to move to about 115- 118 degrees alot better than i have previously got.
hopefully this weekend i will get to try it on a steep hill in four wheel skid

Would go out and take a better one but it's a bit far to walk

Mine sits at just under 90 degrees all day when at 100ks, about 90 - 95 when towing but wont go over 105 when towing up hill. Long beach hill climbs (ninety mile beach) low range never over 110.
That pic of mine is in a surf too, snug fit but it does.

ok so now days i climb up to 120 max. very good improvement! fantastic! cools down very quick also
Re: Removing Holden V6 overheating problems and clutch issue
have now sold this truck, but i found out why the clutch slipped before selling. in putting the master cylinder in, i had put a different pushrod in.. (idiot for not checking) with was about 1-2mm longer in the bulb bit... witch caused the fluid return to block off. only when it got hot up hills... (exaust pipe close to clutch line) the fluid expanded with the heat and applied the clutch just enough to make it slip. plus my repco temp gauge (crap gauge) sender was screwed into the top hose witch gave me higher readings than i would have got going into the engine.
