Usual vitara things to be careful of, front diffs and cv's. 95 have the stronger cv's anyway but are still breakable. Also look out for broken door handles and faulty power window switches. I have a mate with an auto 1600 lwb and it seems to be reliable, could just do with some more power. It should be better in swb for power and reducing the number of times you belly out.

As far as auto vs. manual I dont find any real issues except the difficulty of getting high enough revs for delivering power at very low speeds.

I'm going to get the trans specialists to modify the torque-converter to a high-stall set up to make up for it and just live with the extra fuel burn and higher cruising revs. Mine is the old 1989 tri-matic type three-speed though.
