Which GPS to buy?
Which GPS to buy?
Hi I am after opinions for which gps are recommended? I don't know bugger all about them. I would like a dash mount but also portable. Any tips on the gps or software would be much appreciated. Ovious use is for the bush and tracks, Not really interested in streets at all.
Cheers Simon

Whats the IGO Primo like? I like the geeky 3D feature how it elevates hills / contours etc. Gimmicky but cool
That would be ideal if you could load something like Gary Turners Maps on to it (anyone know if you can?).

I have got a Samsung Galaxy S, the app I have on the phone is OruxMaps - is free. To get the maps I use a program call Mobile Atlas Creator and it pulls the maps from nztopomaps.com which is also free.
So if you have a Android phone with GPS this is a free solution and it works well for me.
The maps also works with backcountry navigator apparently but have not tried. Just have a look at the Mobile Atlas Creator website, shows which programs can be used.

Has anyone tried the Hema Navigator?
Does both topo mapping (memory map I think) as well as street nav. Seems to cover all options and has a reasonaby good sized screen too.

Cheers for posting this one. Have just been having a bit of a play with that. I successfully created a map of Tawa and that worked. Then tried making one of the lower North Island but looked like it would take forever. Is the idea that you just create smaller maps for where you're going too etc?

It takes awhile, but just let it run, and if you have a decent size memory card you should be able to get a large area. I have from Auckland north, and it fits on a 4gb memory card.
Also how many zoom options you chose adds to the size as well. Just have to get a feel of what is best for you.

Re: Which GPS to buy?
I have a navman which has been hacked to allow use of Oziexplorer.
Works great and I can switch between navman for street navigation and Ozi for maps either topo or aerials downloaded off the net.

Re: Which GPS to buy?
I have two garmin nuvi 1390's but wish I had got a higher end model.
Although I have Hunting & Fishing's img file and OpenGPS img file loaded my models can't upload routes from likes of google earth.
Garmin's website shows the models that do under the section "Routes" when you compare models. 0 means it can't accept uploads of routes. 10 means it can accept 10 uploaded routes and 100 well a few more routes.
Nice and easy to plot a route in google earth but a pain when you can't make use of it.
Maybe time to ditch these models for something a little better and probably more expensive.
I also have a couple of Navman MY65's, the feature I like on theirs is creating a trip but don't care for the rest of the Navman features. Can't upload external anything to these.
