Godley Glacier 29-31st July - 2 August

Post by Taz »

I have a location for the extra two days (subject to interested parties approval  ) so PM me if you are keen and I will fill you in.

All are welcome on the Sunday and Monday night trip also. Smaller huts so smaller numbers through and not loop track so trailer queens suited.

That time of year again!

Was an epic trip last year, thanks again to Al for leading it. Legend.

Doing things a bit differently this year with a trip straight MaCaulay hut on the Friday leaving all Sat to head to the Glacier and back to the hut with hopefully a decent play in the snow in between.
Sunday will be a leisurely stroll back out, then leg it somewhere else for another 2 days wheeling only 1.5 hours from Tekapo.

Bit of a speel from the thread from last year below to help dust away the cobwebs.

Grade 2 with the option of driving some more difficult bits that can be classed as Grade 4-5, so there is something for everyone.

Family friendly trip.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

Snorkel.
Front and rear tow hook.
Your own recovery gear.
First Aid kit.
Suitable footwear for rocks and snow.
Food for 4-5 days (some extra noodles and a tin or two or something to chuck in them would do), just in case.
Fuel if you feel its applicable to your truck.
WARM CLOTHING and plenty of it.
Your own rubbish home with you. Idea is you leave the place better than you find it.
Firewood for the hut

TENT!
There is a hut but depending on numbers on the day and who is already in there by the time we arrive you may not get a bunk.
I would like everyone who is not sleeping in their truck to have their own tent again, or to have arranged something with others beforehand.

WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING IF YOU CAN:

Fire Extinguisher.
PRS Radio. We will be using channel 19.
Chains.
Camp cooker if you want to cook your own food and not wait for the hut cooker to be free.

I like to keep things pretty basic with my noodle and canned tuna diet (don't be jealous Jerry) but if people want to sort out shared meals go for gold.

Pretty loose format like last year.
From Tekapo about 1hr to the start of the shingle 2 hours to the hut at a meandering pace.
Want to get there before dark so those who want to sleep in tents have day light to setup.

Sun should set about 5.20pm so want to be there 4.30pm at the latest so how about a:

12.00pm fuel up/meet up 12.30pm departure at Tekapo Shell
8.40am fuel/meet 9am depart Rolleston BP
4.30am departure from Picton

Filled up pretty fast with people from last year! PM me if you are interested in tagging along.

Trucks confirmed for trip:
1.Hillyfilly
2.NickC
3.Pressy
4.kbjj
5.Taz01
6.JR
7.Axle
8.MyLux
9.Black Death
10.Possum
11.Froggie
12.Taz
13.Nstacey

List is subject to change as there are always unavoidable complications that pop up for some so flick me a PM or post here if you're keen for a spot if one pops up.

The Shell station in Tekapo (aka Tekapo Services)

Map

Rolleston BP

Map

No body ended up going for a shot last year but same common sense deal.
Rifles welcome along with licenses and they stay locked in your truck unless you are using them.

Looks like there is finally some snow down there as of 10/7/11!

A club is heading in that weekend as well from ChCh...might pay to be prepared for tenting if you plan on staying at the MaCaulay during that time.

Right, we are all go for said dates!

Adjusted the Tekapo departure time a little as I calculated from my old pad rather than the Rolly BP by mistake

Don't want to get too relaxed there and fall asleep
Plenty of time for coffee and yakking at the hut.

Reckon you'll meet us there or at Tekapo? Rolleston adds about 30mins to your trip. Could even just catch you up further down the highway.

You people have an awesome trip...was brilliant last yr.
With you getting to Tekapo a cpl of hours later than we did last year ..youll have to not muck around too much or it will be dark when you get to the hut.

You did get my message about coming again aye? Never heard back from ya.

Made it there in the dark last year following Jason's keen eyes  Was one of the highlights but only because I didn't have to pitch a tent!

I have a location for the extra two days (subject to interested parties approval  ) so PM me if you are keen and I will fill you in.

All are welcome on the Sunday and Monday night trip also. Smaller huts so smaller numbers through and not loop track so trailer queens suited.

Chur!

Damnit!
Everyone needs tents or a truck to sleep in anyway as it is a public hut and for all we know it could be the annual South Canterbury midwinter gazebo convention up there the same weekend

Murphy's law there will be another club the weekend before and after as well.

How many trucks are planning to go on the club trip?
My only concern would be running out of room for cooking and socializing in the hut if it is bucketing down outside.

The Chch 4WD Club will be there, might be another as I don't know who Twin Diffs is referring too.
At the moment 5-6 trucks. At this time of the year there is generally hunters as well.
We will also be taking tents.

Was in there when you had your trip there last year. Thanks for the rescue.
