97 kzn185 ABS and Air Bags
97 kzn185 ABS and Air Bags
Help required.
i am looking at removing the Air bags so i fit a Iron man bar to the front now dont quote me but NZ LTSA rules say along the lines of after 14 years Air Bags and all the componentry that run them can be removed from a vehicle has anyone done this yet for a bit more knowledge on this. Also ABS what is the law with this if a vehicle has it can i remove it.
all of this will become clear in the next few weeks

Re: 97 kzn185 ABS and Air Bags
I've discussed this with a certifier and he said that a vehicle over 14 years can have the airbags removed. He said that he physically needs to see a space where the air bag used to be so just pulling the fuse is not good enough. It needs to be certified as well.
For the ABS, I usually just pull the fuse out when I'm off road and put it back in on road, it's saved an accident once already. I'm not sure of the legal ramifications associated with removing the ABS.

Re: 97 kzn185 ABS and Air Bags
I dont know the law behind the air bags but the abs.
We had two 100 series on the farm and they had switchs on the abs ,as one of our first rolled 4 times after it kicked in coming down a hill.
Dont know if its legal

Section 2.4 air bags.
This currently on their website but it is dated 2001 so I don't know if the law has been changed.
I am interested in this also as it means being able to fit a non airbag compliant bull bar.
It does state it would need to be certified though.

5.6 Airbags, states the airbag in a vehicle over 14 years old can be removed or disabled, but must be certified.

Re: 97 kzn185 ABS and Air Bags
If you remove the airbag, you need to fill the cavity with an impact absorbing material. You may also need to replace the seat belts, as the seat belts are designed to work with the airbag. There is a factsheet I bumped into yesterday on the LTSA website about it, but can't find it now

I don't know if they are all the same but my 96 KZN185 has passenger airbag aswell, If you remove that one you may be able to put the dash covering back in place

You see the oz boys that buy the patrols with no airbags open up the passangers side and put cubbys in there ay might be worth a look??
Re: 97 kzn185 ABS and Air Bags
right as said last week i will explain.
I have at my disposal a prado front end and was going to put it in but having issues with ABS, so thinking of 80 series with a diff cut and slight shorten, using the factory ABS unit in that.
if i can get away with removing the ABS from the kzn185 i would rather use the Prado front end.
so now the question is once again.......
can i/ am i aloud to remove the ABS from the truck

A friend has done the prado front onto a 185 surf, big job compared to the 130 surf.

I am 95% sure, will check next time I see him. Reason for putting the 130 transfer in was because the LH drop ones are weak as and he had already wrecked one. But a 130 transfer doesn't bolt up to a 185 trans (well it bolts up with the splines don't meet)

ok makes sense if i was to go down the drivers side wouldnt i change the adapter as well (from the rear of the sump on the trans back)
the trans in the girl has center diff lock in it so would be keen to keep that

Yea problem is thats the bit that breaks...
This one just runs drive flanges on the front and push button 4WD. I didn't do any of the wiring, I can't remember if that was a PITA or not between the 130 and 185 tran's's.

Listen to him Jas. The ctr diff is piss weak and if you can ditch it, I would. I have already done a ctr diff in mine and it wasn't under what I would consider to be massive stress.

if your doing all those proposed mods, then you will need cert... if your going to be getting a cert anyway, then the abs system can be certified, but it needs to be completly removed (ie new lines etc etc)... thats my understanding for a couple of older cars been done around town in workshops i know...
i used to Cruise, now i PATROL
