What size wire for Mig welder.??

Post by haydgq »

Hi guys,

Im hoping all the engineers and fabricators can chime in here.

I've just finished a 15kg roll of 0.8 mig wire and of course i was half way thru a farken project.

Its a 200 amp Mig running straight C02 and i usually weld between 3-10mm but also sometimes i might need to work on a little panel steel.

Ive got heaps of .8 and 1mm tips here so wondered if i should switch to 1mm wire but then im thinking 1mm is far to thick for panel steel inst it.????

Does anyone know a better place to buy a 15kg roll as they start at $47 on trademe.

Cheers Hayden

0.8-0.9 is pretty universal. I use 0.9 for most stuff.

I use .8 for most things only change to .6 for panel work. My mig came with .6 for some reason so i've kept that and just restock with .8.

I know what you mean about running out, I ran out last weekend half way through making my sliders  The weekend before i ran out of gas  always happens on the weekend.

Whatcha working on?

Hey Mark how's it going and how is that green machine coming along.?

I was bored so starting making a little trolley/cart for my Plasma cutter, i was gutted mate as i was really getting into it aswell.

Then i was going to make some coil retainers for all four corners on the lux, then bleed the brakes ready for my brake test next week, fark i hope it passes the 5 stops as its going in on the 35in simex's and beadlocks

I'm thinking the same thing about mine, I know the brakes work well i'ts just that driving on silverstones is like driving a tractor

I'm slowly ticking things off the list, still hoping to have it legal this year

Yea its a tricky one aye as we want our beadlocks on cert plate and legal but the beadlocks have bloody great tractor tyres mounted on them, luckily mine actually drive really well and they ballance up better than my 33in wranglers for some reason like i can easily do 140km on the simexs with no wobbles or shakes what so ever.

So whats actually left on your truck now.?

Thanks for the comments guys i think i might just stick with 0.8 as its been sweet so far and i suppose being thinner you actually get a bit more on the roll.? Yea and the C02 gas burns a little hotter aswell.

As far as getting it ready for cert i need to redo back brakes (going from the subaru that are on it now to MR2)
Hook up the hand brake.
make a decent front panhard rod, I'm still running the cut down rear one at the moment.
replace all the rubber brake hoses, there all 20 years old!
get a wheel alignment, It's running an eyelignment at the moment.
Find and fix a very annoying oil leak, engine oil dripping from bellhousing but dosen't look to be rear main, I,m hoping it's a cam cover leaking at the back of the motor.
Probably a few other small things i've forgotten

Then theres heaps of things to get it ready for offroad: breathers, mount recovery gear, finish rear bar, front hooks etc

Oh and find a money tree so i can do all this!

Hows yours going?
