carpet removal gone wrong!

Post by jakwoo39 »

a few months back now i removed the carpets from my landcruiser and decided to under seal where the carpet used to be as i had seen it done on mates trucks.
i bought the CRC undersealer and painted it on the inside of the car, the trouble is that it never went hard so every time i touched the floor the undersealer would come away on my hands.
so i went and asked the guys who i had seen it done in there trucks and they used the kahguard from cookies toyota so i got that and painted over the top and it did go hard. BUT it melts again under heat from gearbox ect

so does anybody know how to either remove this s**t or know where i might be able to get some vinyl or something similar to cover the whole floor again?

I just did mine with "hippo" deck liner, its a 2 part mix so goes real hard and durable.
would suggest putting a couple of heaters under truck for a while to soften it as you say it softens with heat and use a scrapper to remove what you can then get the rest with rags and turps, kerosene or even paint thinners if it dosnt want to move. then start again. find one of the products used for coating ute decks with. expensive but awesome results

There is not going to be a nice way of removing it,wax and grease remover, turps or petrol and a shit load of rags and a scraper is the only way to do it.If you use underseal again make sure its rubberised/paintable not bitumen based, bitumen based does not harden heat and solvents melt it

Heatgun (not too hot) and scraper...
Then solvent clean.... NO HEATGUN....
And plenty of fresh air....

What about going in the opposite direction and trying dry ice?

Works wonders with sound deadening.

You can make ya own dry ice if you have a large CO2 extinguisher.
Make a cardboard tubeup that fits over thehorn of the extinguisher.its got to be quite long ....point the horn into the corner of acardboard box with a rag in the corner ...gently squeeze the trigger....dry ice will form like snow ...wearing thick leather gloves crush it in ya hands to form ice....not as good as the pellets you can buy but is a fun way to make it.
Be careful dry ice is -40 C it will burn you real fast.

I'm so glad I came across this post, I will be ripping the carpets out of my new motor soon and was planning to do the same thing with the first suitable thing I saw... could've been in the same boat!

Good luck getting it sorted :)

Use Rhino or Hippo liner, Have done decks in it and its a two Pack product so goes hard as and isn't solvent or heat sensitive. That Kahguard stuff is still quite solvent sensitive if I remember right. I wouldnt put anything over top again, the bottom stuff is always going to affect the top coats. Will never go hard, best bet is going to be scraping it off then attack the leftover bits with, turps/thinners/petrol. Taking it off is gunna suck. :D
Oh and try Rainbow paints(Dndn) or Coating Supplies(Invers) probably cheaper than Cookes
