WANTED - FJ40.

Post by petefj40 »

I'm looking for a real straight Toyota FJ40 in the best original condition. I'm missing my old 40 to much. But this time, if I find one at the right price? I won't be modifying it one bit. If anything. I'll want to take it back to original condition. I'm over modifying street legal stuff.
I'm sick of using my Holden round town too and even more sick of using it for towing shit.

SO. If you see a mint looking FJ40 before I do? Please put the link to it here.
Cheers!

Pete.

Cheers.
But I've seen that one too.
I've always thought. The good ones go first and go so bloody fast no one gets a real chance to see em before everyone else does. That's how it was when i brought my 3rd one. It had been online for just a day and I brought it. It wasn't original but it was rust free and straight as.

So if anyone helps me find it (may take a while) I'll be sending you a box of piss.

Not completely original but this could be worth investigating:

From what I know of you, my 2c is that you should get one with disc brakes in the front, power steering and a 350 chevy. Get one that is already done and then no more mods are ever required. This good have been worth looking at too (but sold now):

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =382183421

But... I'd start by offering this guy $7.5k as thats what he paid for it:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-ca ... 784386.htm

Or if you are happy to spend the money this looks very tidy:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-ca ... 755704.htm

Sorry, I know that 3 of my 4 recommendations are not the original condition truck you are looking for (just happen to be what I look at on TM every day).

Cheers guys.

I guess I should write down a couple of must haves.

-Hard top
-Little rust
-Original seats
-Original motor, petrol or diesel

I'm in no rush to buy. I don't mind waiting for the right one. I've seen most out there and aren't happy with what's there.
I don't mind paying and getting what I pay for.

The more original? The better.

Many thanks FJ40 hunters!!

Given what you have said above why not try and contact the guy that won the fully restored (by Toyota Signature Class) FJ40 in the Marc Ellis ToptoBottom challenge.

The winner of the truck may not even be a landcruiser enthusiast and everything is for sale at the right price.

You will not find a more original, tidier FJ40 than this one in the world I suspect.

If you haven't already seen it here is the build video:

Re: WANTED - FJ40.

Cheers fellas.

Yep, everything's for sale at the right price, but, I can't justify spending that much even though that fully restored 40 would be maybe one of the best in the world. I'd love to own it though. Any 40 lover would.

I know the drum brakes suck most of the time. More so if you go offroad. But I want a 40 as an everyday run around and tow vehicle. A diesel would be the go. I'm not into the small steering wheels or custom seats. I really like them in their stock form. No power steering or disk brakes are fine for what I want.
I think the only mods I'd do, if I was to do them would be, freshen up leaf springs, replace shocks and maybe a turbo on a stock diesel. Those three things would be it. A bit more grunt for towing up hills and a fresh ride back to stock height.

i'd suggest discs dude... the drums dont stop a fawdy at the best of times yet alone towing etc..

Id disagree about needing discs, yes they are superior but the drums on mine are fine and stop her on a dime. You just need to keep them out of the mud, look after them and realise it isnt a race car and drive to the capabilities of the truck.

Id just be more worried about towing at any great speed. mine was really struggling on the hills towing the landrover. theyll keep going though just slowly at times. A turbo would help though, just dont mine to change from stock standard.

good luck with the search pete, took me ages to find mine as all the good original ones go fast.

cheers

What about 'venting' them? There was an interesting thread on it the other week.

Might be a good idea drive one around for a week and to a from Nelson to make sure you can put up with it after being in the lap of luxury
Can imagine some frustration trying to reverse a big trailer with armstrong steering. Although you probably already know what its like if your old 40 was bought without it?

I'm with andy nibs. I've driven 40's with drums lots. When they are tuned (like you have to adjust them a few times in a year) they pull up surprisingly well, even with a load on the back. You just have to put up with stinking out the cab on those long down hill stretches, even with lots of engine braking. And as for the "armstrong power steering"? With skinny 33's or 31's and the bus like steering wheel? No worries mate.

Seems to. But I'd prefer one a little later model. That one's been on TradeMe for a while now.

What about looking to see what are neighbors have, I saw this the other day, they regularly have ones coming up which tick the boxes you are looking for.

Looked at that white one today. It was in good condition. Not a lot of rust. Owner owned it 9 years. Been parked in a garage most of it's life. Was pretty tight to drive. Brakes were out standing. Steering good. Started on LPG first time. Couldn't fault it really. Call me picky. I just didn't like the white. I'll keep looking..

Picky.

Give my old fella a bottle of whiskey and he'll paint it for free.

It'll be with house paint and a brush but he was getting pretty good at it before he gave up drinking

That one in Aus is mint.

Its easy to do a paint job. Ive painted 3 of my Datsun's in the drive at home here. Painted the engine bay while the motor was still fitted on two of them. Took me around about a week to do each car. Did acouple of hours at night after work and then did the final coat in the weekend. You just have to take your time and do the prep work right etc, blah blah......... But overall very very doable. Also will give you a chance to fix any little rust issues, if they need doing.
