Right I've got a frustrating issue on my 80 series. About 2 months ago I ran out of diesel as I was pulling into a petrol station. After I filled up I had air in the lines and it would stall unless I rode the clutch. So I pulled over and gave the primer a few pumps and that seemed to fix the issue.
Anyway, yesterday on my way home it started doing it again. I drop the clutch in first and give it some revs and it tries to stall and I end up doing a bunny hop to save it from stalling - fun! I have also found it is taking longer to start (hot or cold) with it cranking a few times vs. firing immediately.
I gave the primer a few pumps but no good. I took the inline filter out and joined the fuel line directly to the injector pump in case it was leaking from the filter and drove it around my house but same problem. I checked the hoses on top of the tank but can't really see where it would be leaking around these. I got a 1lt bottle of diesel and ran the fuel line from the inline filter in the engine bay directly into it (instead of down into the tank) but same issue.
Once the truck is rolling it seems to run fine. Its not down on power and it doesn't seem to make a difference if its hot or cold. I can't see diesel leaking anywhere. It really seems like air in lines but I thought I would have removed this possiblity by running the fuel line directly into the 1lt of diesel in the engine bay as well as priming it heaps.
Anyone got any ideas?
Cheers
Dan
Fueling issue on 1hdt
Re: Fueling issue on 1hdt
It sounds like the system still has air in it.
The primer only brings fuel up from the tank to the injector pump.
Replace the filter as it is probably full of rubbish from the bottom of the tank ( I don't know why it sucks the trash up when you run out of gas)
Put the filter back in line and start by taking the the line of the injector pump and pump the primer until fuel comes out without bubbles.
Then make sure that you can get to the feed lines on the top of each injector and start the truck ( this is often easier with a second person as the truck may keep stopping)
While it is being cranked or is running crack the line on each injector in turn (wear glasses) until fuel squirts out then lock it up again. Continue until all are done.
This gets all of the air out of the pump and injector lines and should sort your problem.

There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.

Wicked, will have a go at bleeding it again as its been driving me nuts as it does seem like air in the line. Really appreciate your advice.

Cheers Skid! I've got my weekend cut out between trying to fix this annoying issue and track clearing. Oh yeah, and then there's the 8 week old! All good.
Re: Fueling issue on 1hdt
fit a bit of clear fuel hose on the tank return pipe and look for bubbles. could simply be sucking air in somewhere. if you do see bubbles then simply put clear hose on the other side of pump/filter etc till you work out where air is being sucked in.
a partly blocked fuel filter makes any air leak worse.
