you overfill a auto trans? just built a hilux with commodore v6 and auto trans. the book said trans with empty torque converter holds 11 litres. so put in 10. 2 5 litres as thats what i had.. 10 mins later propably a litre on the floor. came out the shifter shaft. bugger a seal to do. started engine to pump oil into torque converter, leak stopped. all good will come back to the seal later on. Due to engine placement ( 250 mm thru the firewall ) using the trans dipstick isnt easy or acurate as its severely modded. usable once I have a reference point to work from. from the jerk I was getting when putting in to gear I am of the belief the trans was in fact overfull. took it out to test everything and everything went awesome including trans untill I wound it up in the low box for probably 30 seconds on the gravel rd. it suddenly free revved, i thought it had changed down so backed of a bit it re engaged and carried on. now it starts of but dosnt change up gears. reverse still there.
put it on the trailer and haven't tried it again since then now it has cooled down. my thoughts are that if indeed it is overfull it was ok until held open for a bit then built up too much pressure and blown a release valve? or blown the whole trans? so what I want too know from any automatic experts out there is there a pressure release valve? does it reset its self. has it destroyed the trans??? any other ideas???
thanks clive

Re: what happens when???
would have no drve at all if that was the case. they have a pump in them that would sort that.
thanks for your input

If you drained the trans but not pumped it dry there will have been at least 2 litres still inthe torque convertor, its next to impossible to drain them dry even out of the vehicle.
If it was over full the oil will have been sloshing around all the moving bit and has most likely foamed. Being full of air you get no drive, either that or like you suggest its blown a pressure valve. My guess would be foam though. over filling an auto is as bad for it as under filling it.

Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed
