terrano steering problem,

Im currently trying to sort my truck out for an alignment, Im finding it bloody difficult to figure out what ball-joints are cut and what are not. Today i replaced my outter passenger tierod, so no since i had my truck i have done, both passenger tierods, draglink, and idler arm(My newer idler arm seems shorter that my old one, so the draglink sits closer to the chassis? is that a big issue?

Just saw the link posted, they saw aftermarket draglinks are shorter.... Thats why my brace doesnt fit, and i had to pack out with washers, i think to make it work properly i will need a standard one, with decent bushes. Can you buy decent bushes anywhere? because my last set from BnT were so soft, after about 2 weeks the were completely buggered.


I just read through 10 pages of that link and looked at the last 6pges of photos It has made me want to get one of the custom drag-links from sketchy even more, From what they say, if you use those tractor tie-rods and the custom drag-link with braced idler, its dam near invincible.

Go genuine Nissan idler bushes, they are dense nylon and last well.
Stay away from the cheap aftermarket Tie Rods, Idler arms, Idler shafts.
Buy a second hand genuine idler shaft and arm, fit new bushes and all will be sweet.
Now these cheap Tie Rods, (rule of thumb, you get what you pay for ) They last 2 or 3 trips then they have enough play in them not to be wof'able and unsafe.
I now have a small box full of shot ones.
I'm now looking at getting genuine Nissan Tie Rods to see how long they will last.

Righto cheers for that, All my new tierods are after market ones from Bnt... so guess they wont last long, How much are genuine ones? Im going to have a look at a petrol auto terrano for a few parts i need (handbrake cables, rear calliper, windscreen) I better add idler arm to the list, Get it sorted properly.

Yes they do fit, the South African guys use them, but you have to re machine the tapers for them etc as they are a different size, but at least they sit square on with the threaded shaft section being pre bent a little. I have some pictures but I do not remember the website. I see they have done a similar trick with the centre link too.

To get the genuine bushes, Am i best to get them from Cockram Nissan? or is there somewhere else in ChCh?

hi all i recently bought a 91 terrano and its near imposible to keep on the road wanders all over the show had the allignment done tyers all even wear and same tread and recomended presure anyone have any ideas whys its doing this its stock standard

Mine wonders all over the road atm aswel, but i know thats because my alignment is way out, buggered bushes, and both lower balljoints are buggered. If you had an alignment done recently, they should of really picked up the problem..

took it in for a wof today found out both bottom ball joints stuffed and inner tie rod stuffed so will know after the weekend if it steers any better if the parts come that is also my wof person said the ones who did the alligment are useless i wont say what company it is he also recomended i take it to the 4x4 upgrade place on brougham street in the future

Or you could take it to Chamberlains in Sydneham, they are very good on my Terrano with steering issues. I would recommend them over any 4x4 place that has little knowledge of Terranos.
Whatever you do, do some homework first, and I think you should publish the name of the outfit that did your wheel alignment so others know to avoid them.

I agree. I took my truck for an alignment and first thing the guy done was jack up the front and found both bottom balljoints and top bushes were fucked.

tonis tyre service. The inner tie rod completly stuffed they should have picked up on it considering not hard to pick up on just a simple wobble of the wheel. im thinking after i have changed that and the two bottom joints i will take it to chaimberlans get a good check of it all

we do wheel alignments at work (www.championauots.co.nz) we align all makes and models and if there is any play in steering ect we wont do a alignment, obviously they must of had a hard time getting the toe set correctly with worn parts, all adjustments are important so we like to get every thing bang on, also road test after to check for pulling and to make sure steering wheel is straight,

if anyone is still experiencing this prob, go have a look (dare i say it) on the NPORA site. kiwipete has a decent build thread on his terrano, and made up an idler arm brace and a draglink/tierod stopper that got rid of bending probs. he has good pics up of them
i used to have a terrano and didnt have probs as it was a 95 with the bigger tapers.
if worse comes to worse, convert it all to the bigger taper.
