Avoca River

Hi all,
Just got back yesterday from Basins Hut.
We left on Wednesday arvo with pissing down rain all the way up till turnoff to Coleridge.
Fine and dusty all the rest of the way to Glenthorne/ Basins Hut.
River is real low but the track on sides of the river has been washed away in places.
The fulla that owns the station now is really pulling out all stops with new fencing everwhere (about 4 or five gates to open and close now)
New shingle road in to where the gate old gate on stopbank was, and we were talking with the excavator man and he said that the shingle road will continue through to "The Retreat" and a all weater acces road is going to be bulldozed all the way into Basins Hut.
So next time I'll leave the 4 x 4 at home and take in a Car

Yea its not too far, bout and hour and half to Glenthorne then approx 2 hours into Basins hut.
We normally head in there about 3 times a year (reasonable spot for hunting)

CUTC tramping club is heading in to Avoca Hut tommorow with2 trucks - Aim for as far as poss - to get water tank etc into the hut. Hope to get past Galilee Creek - but here there are Debrie and boulders around the place. will update when back.

I have driven to within 100 mtrs of Avoca Hut, the last 1km is really good, but it is pretty uneventful to there, although a nice trek up the rivers etc.

cool pic's guys looks a good spot. Been eyeing up that area for a hunting trip for a while but would be a foot mission.

So I take it the new truck being new and better will make it the full distance Rok? From all reports it sounds like this is the calm before the storm for builders (before people can rebuild) must be time to complete the finishing touches

The last time was at the height of Xmas break a few years back (4 or so), The last climb up a bit of rise in the river (about 3mtrs or so) had us heading towards some fernery and the place was packed. So in the interests of tread lightly, we backed off. The other boys who were there put on a good show though, I think Turoa may have been one of them

Just told FCC to stick up their arse rather than have stick up mine. So yeah, there will be some hours put in on the Mutt so I can get it out and thrash the shit out of it

We only got as far as Galilee Creek on sat 2nd July 2011.
no track across that creek, though the track after that looks fine.
Something big would get past maybe! or moving lots of rocks.
Lots of snow on valley floor.

and there is no all weather road still.

We just got back from another trip up to Basins Hut.
The weather was magic and rivers were low.
We carried on up the Avoca a bit but with four kids in tow didn't want to push it too hard.
Camped close to the hut and had the whole place to ourselves
They haven't put in all weather track and things still the same up there
Will post some pics soon.

I think I can safely blame Mike for causing me the rockcrawling disease
Love to get back up the Avoca again, this time get past the hut
Maybe next Xmas, when all the boys have their wrecks fixed/finished/sorted.....

Yea the lux is finally going
No real dramas except the missus managed to turn the amp into a smoking wreck by playing the music too loud
Good trip all round and looking forward to a few good trips this coming year
New house is sorted and work is flat out so looks promising to be a great new year.

Hi Mike! long time no hear! Funny you should mention the MTB's, I have been playing around on one of these for a while now, downhill is such good fun, not so keen on the up lol, but a primo singletrack DH is worth it. I cant believe the gnarly places you can ride one of these things Wellie has heaps of MTB tracks, get out most weekends for a blast, love it! so much so that I haven't even got the Jalopy out at all last year lol. That said though, I've made a new years resolution to use it a lot more, after all the time I put into it.....
