Onboard air A/C pump....

Post by NJV6 »

Just putting the onboard air together... Any comment on whether I need a one way check valve after the A/C pump? I have seen some with and some without...

What ya done and Why?

Depends if you are running an air tank or not. If you are then you should ideally have a check valve to retain the pressure in the tank.
Some would debate the need for it given the reed/check valve arrangement in the compressor but for the minimal cost I would install one.

I am just finishing off an OBA installation using a Sanden compressor and have included a 'Load Genie' check valve which has a port in the side of it which relieves the pressure in the discharge line when the pump switches off.
This ensures the pump starts against zero pressure although with an A/C compressor this is not so much an issue.

is it very simple to set up a a/c pump to be used as a compressor?

I grabbed one of those elcheapo air compressors from Super cheap for mine. Ditched the pump and motor and just used the tank which has a one way check valve and air reg etc. I also have a sanden pump, but it is a rotary one and not the much more prefered piston job. Time will tell if it works or not I guess. If you after a real good set up, then putting it together with seperate components is probably the go.
Lots of info on Google, but you have to wade through lot's of shit to find it

Cool, yep I grabbed a cheap compressor from repco, well it was less than cheap, i walked in there and said, "got any returns which have crapped out, just want the tank", and walked out with the complete thing with no motor for $0.

And fixed my other compressor with a dodgy switch and only ended up using the tank, hence no one way valve. I could have searched more but I can't be arsed, haven't asked a noob question for ages!

Currently I have all the bits to do it well but no one way valve, might look into this genie ones, sounds like the goods. And will prob go phish for spank factor!

I converted (well, cut some pipes and stuck a few bits on) my A/C pump to an onboard air...cost $30 i think, for the outlet fitting, some hose clamps and a couple of cable ties...

It's rough as but it works a treat.

Must try that returned compressor trick, wouldn't mind a tank...

put ya finger over one hole and turn the pump by hand, you will feel pressure or suction, turn pump in correct direction of course!!!, but large hose generally in and small hose is pressure out.

 definitly don't do this with the motor running... you could loose bits if you grab the intake
Aircon pumps are high presure low flow I've found some rated as much as 240psi
