Hippy's 80
Re: Blair's 80
Bugga......... I was soooooo wanting to use them on the Truck.

Re: Blair's 80
so what is the other project
Re: Blair's 80
A good old Datsun 1200 aka Monty(World famous in NZ)
..... When I got it around 10years ago it look like this...

Turned it into this....

Plus a few mods to motor/gearbox/diff etc...... list goes on.
Then acouple of years ago I blew a motor(Club day out at the track) and some tin worm was starting to show, so I am currently doing a total strip and rebuild. ATM he is looking like this......

Then there is the third project......... And you guessed it, its another 1200!!!

I havnt really started on it yet, but I need to.
So the Truck gets the short end of my time ATM.

Re: Blair's 80
I have taken off the factory mounting for the rear bumper. As that is where I am going to mount the rate-able tow/recovery hooks.
I just need to know which way would be best to mount them.......

Tow hooks and some angle.

8.8 hi-tensile bolts.

Stamped rating on the hooks.

The rear chassis rail all ready to go.

Opt. 1 which Im guessing would be a "hell no!!".

Opt. 2 with the angle and tow hook on the top.

Opt. 3 with the angle and tow hook on the bottom.
Let me know which opt. would be best.

Re: Blair's 80
Personaly i'd say op 1 as it is a direct bolt to chassis and with a backing plate it'd be sweet. as with the angle welded to the chassis that is just another bit to fly off if it fails..
Also remeber chassis rails are hi tensile.. so it should be all good.. my 2 cents wourth..

Re: Blair's 80
option 4... have a piece of angle go both upwards and downwards, bolt the hook (upright as in like option 2's pic) through both.. then the hok will be bolted through 10mm of metal.. use crush tubes and bolt bits of angle through the chassis with a 5mm plate on the very inner rail to spread load too...
my 2c anyways bud..
my 2c anyways bud..

Now that has got my vote........
Re: Blair's 80
Hey Blair, that man Nibbz must have given up his day job and started studying Engineering
, even without the crush tubes and a piece of your 10mm plate on the inside of the first section of the chassis it will do the biz
, might have to wait for Jerry's comments
.

Op 4 with the hook pointing upwards

Andrew1706 wrote:Op 4 with the hook pointing upwards
x2, and you will never revisit it....although that looks like the chassis could be shortened
If you break it... build it stronger.
Re: Blair's 80
well I guess you learn something everyday..
I'll file that away for my next hook install..
Re: Blair's 80

With the tailgate down........ Looks like it will get mounted there.

Just to see if it all worked. I couldnt find a smallish piece of 10mm lying around, so just used some 5mmx50mm flat, as it was handy.
All fitted and painted.....

Thanks for all the input guys. As without it, there is no way it would be as strong as it is.
Now to start on removing the factory front tow/recovery loop things......

Re: Blair's 80
I thought we were doing opt 4 with 2 pieces of angle?
Re: Blair's 80
looking good are you going on the Godley trip if you are i owe you beer and i will send it with them( dont like your chances of getting anything but an empty box tho)

I kinda used a combo of both what Niblik and fitzy said.

Yes Im going to be on the MaCaulay trip, not sure about the Godley trip???...... Confused as why you owe me a beer??? But the right kind of empty boxes do have advantages!!

Re: Blair's 80
you wont rip them out but you'll find the angle will start twisting after a few hard pulls

Re: Blair's 80
What happened to option 4? Sorry dude but i dont think it is a good idea leaving it like that. If not going with option 4 then just bolt the hook straight to the chassis with the plate in behind itll be alot stronger than what youve done.
Sorry to be picky.

Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, front and rear lockers, 35" simex.
Toyota FJ45 build in progress.
Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

Re: Blair's 80
That camo safari you checked out for me
Re: Blair's 80
Totally agree with above, need two bits of angle and one big bit of plate on the inside of the chassis.
Think about what will happen if you get a pull to the side, angle will just bend and also put more stain on the bolts as they will then see some tensile load as well as the shear load.
Option 4 gets my vote.
Cheers

I went with option 5....................

have snatched a few trucks heavier than mine and also 2 cruisers at the same time
never had issues, so far it seems as strong as and also has other benefits as well, like being able to tow trailers and also being able to put a strop on and not have it fall off

Personally i would stick to the bronze bush, if roller bearing fails due to moisture in oil/grease then is will quietly eat the CV shaft, bronze bush is less likely to eat it way thru, they will get warm, sweat oil/grease and be re lubed. but if the truck well maintained and oil and hub freq checked particularly with a lot of off road work they should be good

is there anywhere else that sells the brass bushes other than toyota?need some for old mans truck
