Mud tyres for a Lexus
Mud tyres for a Lexus
Hi there Guys
Want some ne boot for my wagon. Its an Flatdeck LN106 with a 1UZ with G4 Link. Want something fairly aggressive as they will be a second tyre.
Criteria is they will be driven on the road too and from. I also do rivers which pretty much rules out Simex ET,s and Silverstones.
Am thinking 33 or 35 and leaning strongly toward the later.
Maxxis Bighorns have caught my eye. Maybe Super Swamper Jungle Trekker? Have had BFGs aswell and liked them.
Your thoughts?

Re: Mud tyres for a Lexus
If you want something fairly aggressive why not go to the Maxxis Mudzilla. They are fairly wide and should be good in the rivers.
I've only seen the Jungle treckers on one truck but was not impressed by them at all.
The other two - You might as well just use these as your daily driver tires. They are not an aggressive tread pattern that would necessitous running two sets of tires.
Perhaps some Bighorns for daily driving and river work and some simex's for the mud trips...
Just my 2c - Others will have different idea's

Re: Mud tyres for a Lexus
they havent invented any tyres that are fairly agressive, good on the road and good in riverbeds yet..... it just comes down to personal preference and price mate
trying to get an all rounder tyre is always a trade off, less aggressive, not so good in mud, not so good on rock, lesser road handling manners etc

Re: Mud tyres for a Lexus
would suggest you dont go to agressive with all that power as sudden grip breaks things. know people that have removed lexus's because of continuosly breaking diffs/cvs etc in the real hard stuff.
dont like mudzillas as they dont do sidlings well. treppadores maybe. perhaps a little chunky. bighorn or buckshots have proven too be good for road use and off road. Maxxis brand are propably best bang for buck. simex/silverstone shocking on road. and will break everything off road.not great on rocks. Kl71 would be good but expensive .
so bighorn would be the one in my opinion with what you have descriped as your requirement.
remember too much tire/traction = more chance of breakage.
my 2 cents

Re: Mud tyres for a Lexus
check out fedora couragia's as well, these are avaliable in 35's now. good all rounder and decent pricing. seem to go well on lighter trucks. had mudzillas no good on sidelings, dig holes and have a tendancy to unexpectly pull you out of ruts ... ok for a low hp truck not a v8. good in mud tho
70 series prado (KZJ78) and 90 Series Prado (KZJ95)

Dude thats rediculous, with the power/torque of the v8 and the grip of a simex/silverstone you often idle places were normal M/T struggle, thats the point of these aggressive tyres you can go places at half the throttle you normally would need to, were your mates one manuals.?
simex/silverstone shocking on road. and will break everything off road.
The silverstones are pretty bad on-road but a ballanced Simex is fine on road, my 35in simexs on beadlocks drive better with no wobbles that my 33in Mtr wranglers even upto 140kph
so bighorn would be the one in my opinion with what you have descriped as your requirement.

Bighorn would be fine as your road/summer 4x4 and river bed tyres and remember too much traction equals doing tracks easier and being more capable with LESS chance of breakages.

Re: Mud tyres for a Lexus
Sounds ridiculous eh. too much traction a bad thing. we spend all time and money on trying to get traction yet im saying be careful you don't get to much. in his case on 8 inch diffs on a light truck that will bounce when the weight comes back on the wheels = snap. the lexus isn't going to slow down and absorb that shock loading. lexus don't idle over anything. torque isn't there strong suit. touch the throttle and things start happening. mainly the big grin on the drivers face.
simex on the road. I miss read his post thought he said it need to be used on the road. but in fact he said used to get to and from tracks so anything would do that. point I was making is simex/silverstone don't get good safe grip on tar-seal. so wouldn't consider them for road use. manual lexus got pulled out correct. good assumption. auto definitely more subtle. auto lexus I know breaks diffs/cvs regular too
I run silverstones as I too am going for all the traction i can get. but I don't have oodles of power so not concerned by power biting me on the arse. deliberate choice.
I honestly believe that the way lexus engine develops its power, no low torque lots of snarl an overly aggressive tyre isnt the best choice. horses for courses thing. just my opinion.

Yea i get what your saying but as the owner of a Hilux with a auto (manual shift) Lexus on 35in simexs but only a rear locker and open front diff i know what they are like and maybe because mine is coiled and it doesnt bounce it just gets traction but i hardly even need 1st gear as in 2nd low range and with the torque of the V8 i can just idle around with super smooth power as slow as i need to and also have enough grunt to quickly stab the throttle to power up a hill etc, in fact i can almost come to a stop in 3 or 4 gear and still take off again, Ive also thrashed the thing when needed and havent broken a diff or CV yet im actually waiting to bust a cv as i got longs to go in.
Im not saying im the worlds best driver and ive got a shit load to learn about 4x4ing and also my truck but with traction and good suspention you dont need to fang it everywere bouncing around and breaking shit
Re: Mud tyres for a Lexus
Some interesting points. If I ruled out Simex/Silverstone/Swamper type and just aimed for an M/T what would be the pick money no object...within reason.

+1 or a set of Pirelli Scorpion Muds, seen them at work and was truely impressedFakey wrote:Wranglers or BFGs if moneys no object

Re: Mud tyres for a Lexus
been impressed with Wrangler MTR Kevlars on road. Handle really nicely, good on gravel. Ok in mud when you drop the PSI down.
And they still got 5mm left after 45k

Ive got the old style Wranglers in 33's and i used them on my Safari when i was in earthworks travelling around 1100kms a week, did that for 3 years but not 1100kms every week and still have them 4 years later and they have way over half the tread still left.
Great all round tyres but i found them crap in mud, i reakon the Cooper STT or Bfg Muddie would be the better mud tyres that still are great on the road followed by the Maxxis bighorn.

Might give the Maxxis Bighorns a go. What do you pay for a set of 35,s?

my votes bfgs
1990 surf 350 chevy jacked up and currently under construction again
Re: Mud tyres for a Lexus
I rate the new pattern wranglers pretty high. They perform well on slippery rock and clay, in riverbeds, they bag well when you drop the pressure and if you have the power (which you do) clear really well in the mud. Biggest disadvantage is the price!
Re: Mud tyres for a Lexus
Yea but youve got a shitty cruiser Jeremy not an awesome Hilux.
Re: Mud tyres for a Lexus
Let me remind you that in your other post you are actually wanting to purchase a Prado chassis to put your hilux body on. Proving your awesome hilux is actually not that awesome due to you wanting to upgrade to an awesome Prado Chassis and diffs!

Re: Mud tyres for a Lexus
from what ive seen the bfgs side walls arn't the best when it comes to rocks. Might be bad luck but have seen 4 different trucks have their bfgs binned due to side walls cut. All but 1 were in riverbeds.
Everyone i know with bighorns rate them highly, esp considering the price.

Yea and if I do that it sounds like I might even have to call it a Landcruiser! The cheek of LTSA! It will devalue my hilux!

Dont worry mate as the Prado is based on a Hilux as its pretty much a coiled wagon bodied hilux anyway

agree and fitted/used PROPERLY don't dig the ground up like the simexes/silverstones can. Can be bloody hard on inner guards tho.Esp if allready get rub.
