Another SOA Topic

Post by jakwoo39 »

i have a 70 series land cruiser and have started doing a SOA conversion.

leafs are out and about to go and get re-set but my big problem now is the steering

how have people done this?

im a machinist and have access to mills and CNC mills can anybody give me a sketch or drawing so i actually know what to make or perhaps pictures of their trucks

firstly, dont reset the springs chap.. ya want flat springs with a soa.. it'll keep the ride height down otherwise it'll be too rigid..

and what do ya mean the steering? as in the arms on the steering knuckles?

get some high steer arms...

Image

it'll end up like in this sample pic...

i am going to get the springs re set 3 inches lower than they currently are which will still give it a 3 inch lift and i will actually be able to get into the truck this way. any chance you could give me the measurements off yours?

yes if i did no modifications to the springs and did a SOA it would sit 6 inches higher than it does at the moment

but i am getting the springs set 3 inches lower than they currently are

so when i do the SOA it will only sit 3 inches higher

Youd be better to sell your lift springs an get a set of used standard springs. They have less leaves than the lift one so theyll flex an ride much better than reset lift springs
Having less leaves will also mean that the pack is thinner, so itll sit lower on the axle lowering your overall lift aswell.

On another note are you planning on cutting an turning the swivel balls to correct the caster angles?

No i dont plan to change caster angle. And the reason is. I dont think ill be lifting it enough to afftect steering and universal joints. My whole reason of doing the soa is no to clear bigger tires. It is to get the leafs up off the ground

Iv had the truck out a few times now and when i drop a wheel in a rut the leafs scrape on rhe edge of the rut and hold me up

I use box section 3-4mm wall, cut it to lenght, put the 3" holesaw through both sides then cut in half and you end up with two perches.

turf it
you will only need the antisway if there is heaps of body roll.

and if that is the case you should be looking at the set up anyway as you will spend more time on your side than what the set up is worth

ok have strated the soa and soon run into my first problem. i was under the impression that i had lift springs because of a few things.
1st. the truck easily cleared my 33x13.5 tyres
2nd the rear brake hose was way too short

but i went to 4wd panel and parts in dunedin today and bought a set of factory height springs and they are exactly the same!

so my question is was i actualy sold another set of lift springs or how can i lower my landcruiser after the soa

How are they the same? Do they have the same number of leaves? Think my factory rears had 5 leaves an my OME ones had about 8 leaves

Good standard 70 springs will clear 33" tyres no worries, They have 6 in the back and 7 in the front lifted do have more. You could just get the stardard springs reset lower.

the problem with getting them reset is that i will have to move the spring mounts.

could somebody that has factory springs please tell me exactly how many leafs there are on the front and rear and the thickness of all of the leafs together?

You wont need to move your spring mounts with standard springs. They arnt long enough to max out the shackle. I would look at doing a shackle reversal in the front. Less bump steer. Axle doesnt have to go forward to go up. Make sure your spring locating pin is free and clean with antiseize on the thread. Make it easier to remove or add springs later. Easier to tune it on the road rather than the shed :D
If you have to run swaybars so be it. Better that than hard springs

You'll blaze dude
