Runva winch maintenance.

Post by kiwipete »

I have decided to strip down my Runva GEW 10,000 Lb winch while I build the new winch bars for the truck.
I have discovered that there has been a lot of water find it's way into the gearing side of the winch and the grease was very hard, brown and exposed metal rusted.
After struggling for a hour or two I have managed to clean all the grease off all parts and have discovered a few missing/damaged parts.

Image
Image

what I am starting with.
Image

remains of part #17
Image

rust
Image
I will scrub all rusted parts with steel wool before re-assembling them.

Image

Image

clutch assembly
Image
this is being rotated on re-assembly to place the clutch lever in the vertical position rather than the stock horizontal position.

seems there is a part missing to prevent the gear from rubbing on the housing here.
Image

on the bottom of this section there was one of 6 springs in the lower hole, this has completely rusted away.
Image

I have emailed Runva for replacement parts so will strip out the armature end while I wait for them to arrive.

What grease should I use to re-pack it with and how much do you use?

I also wonder should there be a "O" ring go in the slot where the clutch ring slots into the inner housing to prevent water ingress, parts 26 and 29?
It seems to me there is plenty of places for water to get in.

More pictures and progress as I go.....
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

I stripped mine down when it was about 3 months old and it was pretty rusty and the grease was pretty shit looking too, I repacked it with wheel bearing grease, covered all surfaces of all moving parts. Dunno if that's the right stuff to use but winch runs fine and a bit quieter than before too.

Thanks for the replys fellas.

I wonder if I should look at getting some synthetic rope for it while I am at it?

This is a great tech thread about the Runva winch especially the 10,000lb one which I have, I have never seen the internals apart from the diagram before.

I didn't do the maintenance on my winch as I took it to the Runva dealer myself he said that mine was mint the grease was hard and no signs of water only a small amount, but I do keep from submerging my winch when I have too, also I dont use the winch as often.

Great thread and keep the pic's coming kiwipete :D

As for Synthentic rope I would it is a lot safer than the wire rope you got now and it is so much easier to work with.

Thanks, being in Chch it's a little too far to take the winch in so I will persevere.
I just need to find a good price on the synthetic rope and I will replace it.

I dismantled my GEW8000 a while ago..looks fairly identical to this model tho. Still cant work out why the clutch ring is stiff and hard to move. But gearbox end showed little water and good grease. Motor end quite a bit of water and an apparent short in the brush holder..cleaned it all up and reassembled. Seems to go still but yet to test it under load (which is when it was playing up before) as waiting for a new alternator

Yes I noted the clutch ring was as tight as a tight thing on national tight day on mine too. I am hoping it loosens up with the maintenance I am doing.

as tight as a tight thing on national tight day

any relation to blackadder by any chance? lol

Mine has always done that, i usually give it a blast with yamalube or other waterproof lube spray before i go out seems to help a bit. freespooling is quite tight sometime to the point where you cant pull but i think thats the steel cable catching on things..hopefully changing to plasma will make an improvement

I've twice snapped that bolt, tho just resulted in the cable slipping and having to drive home with it looped around the bullbar and untangle the mess later. changing mine to plasma too hopefully in a couple of weeks should have new alternator in and rope on the way

Well I am still waiting for prices and availability of parts for this winch, as well as an end cap for the motor end too as mine has a split almost separating it in two halves!

I am thinking of buying a new winch and on selling this one when the parts come to cover costs?

I cannot finish my winch bars until the winch is mounted up.

OK here is an update.

I finally recieve the parts from Michael and he has totaly misunderstood what I wanted and has sent me the wrong parts.
I have tried to make contact with him bu phone but got answer hone and have emailed again and am still waiting to hear back from him.
I am not happy with the service I have received from him and am seriously thinking of selling the winch "as is" and cutting my losses and shopping elsewhere.

I am one unhappy customer to say the least.!!!

What more can I do? I believed the service from Runva was very good indeed, obviously not in thins case!

I will update as things progress..........

This weekend I have done some more cleaning of the parts for my winch. I have had the wrong parts delivered, some sort of muck up with the packer, so the correct parts will be sent next week. All I am missing is a thrust washer so I can reassemble it all and put this part in at a later stage.
I used my dremel with several different wire brush attachments to clean off the rust and clean the gear teeth out.
Bought them all up like new.

The parts as they arrived, missing is the thrust washer and motor end cap for the armature. All these parts were not ordered so I have no idea why I was sent and billed for them at all.
Image

All shiny now.
Image

Before and after
Image

Drum side polished
Image

Gear side cleaned, still looks slightly rusty but it's actually the the spray grease.
Image

Gear casing assembled.
Image

First set of gears before cleaning.
Image

And after cleaning.
Image
The other two sets of gears required no cleaning as they were not rusted.

Gear housing side assembled.
Image

All I have to do now is insert the motor housing over the armature and bolt it all together. I am seriously considering replacing the wire rope with Dynema 10mm x 30m rope too. The wire rope is sitting on the workshop floor trying to disguise itself as a birds nest.

Have you got far enough to see if this has free'd up your clutch release at all? I dont know how stiff yours is but mine is like apply a fair amount of pressure until it lets go and your knuckles connect with the bullbar cutout  (no load on cable)
Im replacing mine with dyneema too..once the dealer gets back to me lol.
If you consider selling it as is or not working i may be interested depending what you want for it. I may be able to slap my 24v motor onto it

All parts arrived late this morning in the post.

I will look at putting it all together later today and testing it.
I have assembled the clutch ring portion and it does seem a little stiff all the same, but I have a selection of spare parts now including the clutch ring so may swap them out for the older parts and see if that fixes it. Maybe it will free up further with some use?

Yes I am thinking of selling it when I have it back together, what price did you have in mind?

Just a wee update to this project. I had almost finished re-assembling the GEW winch and the negative copper strap came off the head of its bolt as well as one of the spot welded tabs on the end of one bush, so I am looking for some place with a small spot welder to re-attach it, just a slight setback but better it to have happened now than later on when it is all assembled.
Then it will just be a matter of figuring out how to get the bushes over the armature without breaking anything else.

I have fitted the new winch and wired it up using my existing cable, solenoid pack and wireless remote as it was custom wired to suit where I mounted it all under the bonnet.

Image

Image

Now all I have to do to finish it off is make some spacer brackets for the hawse fairlead so it sits flush with the front of the bars. Last thing I need is the new rope being damaged.

The old winch will go on the market complete with a brand new remote control, brand new solenoid and cables with a brand new wireless remote control, just as soon as I get it re-assembled and tested.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.
